I often wonder, why didn't the National Party and the African National Congress just form a coalition goverment.. Like zimbabwe has done now, instead of just giving the country up like that?

The national party really didn't have the interest of the country at heart. Damn politicians are all useless!


We went from English(sap) and Afrikaans(np) society voting each for their own representative parties to White(da) and Black(anc) each voting for their own party.

There has always been a really obscure sence of democracy here.
 
Today, for the first time I drove past a ID poster that says 'Put criminals in jail not Government' haha.

I doubt coalitions like that was acceptable at that time.

as much as i am not a zuma supporter, i have some hope that he (and his advisors) will have seen his mistakes and correct accordingly.

not to bring others down. but at 65.9% how many seats is the AN short of a 2/3rds majority? It just means it will do what it did after the 1999 elections and entice some of the smaller parties really. the only time 2/3rds is safe is if the ANC gets substantially below 66.666...%.

i think what we can take heart from is that even though a good portion of people voted for the ANC, there was still a lot of political discourse around the country. i think that what people on mybb misunderstand is the fact that the people who voted ANC were involved in political debates. our democracy is not dead quite yet.

Were you expecting the ANC to lose?

You seem to miss the point that most of us share your stance that the ANC should not be leading us, the difference is we know that REALISTICALLY it's impossible for millions of people to suddenly sway away from the ANC towards either the DA or COPE. It will take years to coerce people to vote for another (better) party but the breakaway party COPE forming, the DA gaining, the ANC losing support and not getting their 2/3rds are are positive SOLID steps towards putting a decent government in charge.

I know it's not what you want to hear but that's reality..
 
Ok read the thread, firstly foxy, SA will never be like Zimbabwe... Secondly the "traitor" acted accordingly to the wishes of 70% of white south africans... Also i agree with you that the current government is actually pathetic and our infrastructure is crumbling, rife with mismanagment and corruption.. Something that was not there to this extent pre-1994 and it makes me mad the anc can't live up to their standards... Thirdly i do get the vibe that you're racist, the "traiter" gave 80% of south africa rights and your family being scared of just black people is shyte.. And to nika, its funny seeing a racist like you call another person what you are
 
What I see about the election is that while the ANC lost votes, it didn't lose a lot. Certainly no train smash, although I'm sure they're not happy about it. The biggest losers are the smaller, fringe parties like the ID and the IFP. I think the IFP won't recover and the ID will limp along. The big winner is COPE after coming from nowhere. The other, potentially biggest winner is the DA, scooping the Western Cape. They now have 4-5 years to show the rest of the country how clean, effective government can be done. If they do this and they remain scandal free, they can make bigger gains in the next election.

The new Zuma government will certainly be corrupt as the last - so there will be little change there, but perhaps even more so. Zuma will be doing what he's told and I don't think he's a leader's backside. However, we're a long, long way from Zim and the SA economy is so much bigger that it will be a long time before the cracks (caused by people taking rather than creating wealth) appear. My hope now, is that the DA can show the people a better way. But they have a limited window of opportunity in which to do so. And then in the next election they can focus on their achievements, rather than the negative, anti-ANC stuff of this most recent and the last election.

COPE needs to find a clearer direction, or they're just going to be a flash in the pan.
