Anyone have a link to figures regarding the DA's rule in the Cape. I'm specifically talking about the part where Zille turned Cape Town's trade deficit into a surplus (or something along those lines), I'd like to see those figures.

to everyone who contributed to other parties to ensure the ANC did not get their 2/3's majority vote i (amongst others) thank you:)

What I see about the election is that while the ANC lost votes, it didn't lose a lot. Certainly no train smash, although I'm sure they're not happy about it. The biggest losers are the smaller, fringe parties like the ID and the IFP. I think the IFP won't recover and the ID will limp along. The big winner is COPE after coming from nowhere. The other, potentially biggest winner is the DA, scooping the Western Cape. They now have 4-5 years to show the rest of the country how clean, effective government can be done. If they do this and they remain scandal free, they can make bigger gains in the next election.

The new Zuma government will certainly be corrupt as the last - so there will be little change there, but perhaps even more so. Zuma will be doing what he's told and I don't think he's a leader's backside. However, we're a long, long way from Zim and the SA economy is so much bigger that it will be a long time before the cracks (caused by people taking rather than creating wealth) appear. My hope now, is that the DA can show the people a better way. But they have a limited window of opportunity in which to do so. And then in the next election they can focus on their achievements, rather than the negative, anti-ANC stuff of this most recent and the last election.

COPE needs to find a clearer direction, or they're just going to be a flash in the pan.

The best comment to date!!!! :D

The Western Cape is like another country. Seriously, If you look at how smooth things are running there and how quickly they get things done it feels like you are in another world.

Get your facts straight. Up until now the ANC have been governing the Western Cape

Ok read the thread, firstly foxy, SA will never be like Zimbabwe... Secondly the "traitor" acted accordingly to the wishes of 70% of white south africans... Also i agree with you that the current government is actually pathetic and our infrastructure is crumbling, rife with mismanagment and corruption.. Something that was not there to this extent pre-1994 and it makes me mad the anc can't live up to their standards... Thirdly i do get the vibe that you're racist, the "traiter" gave 80% of south africa rights and your family being scared of just black people is shyte.. And to nika, its funny seeing a racist like you call another person what you are

Its quite funny how in every of your posts u seem to talk about me.

I often wonder, why didn't the National Party and the African National Congress just form a coalition goverment.. Like zimbabwe has done now, instead of just giving the country up like that?

The national party really didn't have the interest of the country at heart. Damn politicians are all useless!

We went from English(sap) and Afrikaans(np) society voting each for their own representative parties to White(da) and Black(anc) each voting for their own party.

There has always been a really obscure sence of democracy here.

Maybe you should go read up a bit on the history of this country before commenting. http://www.capetown.at/heritage/history/newSA_gov.htm is a start.

The ANC, NP and IFP together formed the government of national unity. The NP later withdrew from this citing various reasons including being undermined by the ANC majority.

Foxxy
I've completely lost count of the number of times I've heard people say they're not racists and have lots of black friends etc, but then go on to make statements like yours (while avoiding stating anything racial- just innuendo).

And yes, I've been into townships - was there last week in fact. Look at www.projectjouberton.com, make a donation and make a difference instead of just noise. I've been involved in the fundraising and one of my kids is working six days a week, 12 hours a day on the project.

Not being funny, but YOU HAVE A HOPE IN HELL... lol, I can only see black, a big black hole. Things are going to get ALOT worse before they get better.

I'm not scared to fight back... war or civil unrest... I'm here... to me the enemy is corruption... and that is largely the ANC incoming

Oh, and one other positive point - they've kept a lid on Julius Malema since the elections, we haven't heard a peep!!

Me holds thumbs and touches wood!

It's only been hours... whats the odds... any takers :D

lol, the idiot that handed the country over to Mandela in 1994...Remember him? He is the biggest traitor in the world! He literally handed this country and us, the innocent, over to a bunch of monkeys.

Then I'm guilty too... I voted yes in the referendum... hoped it was better after that... but yes... only wish we trained them before handing over power

U are a ****ing racist my friend, end off. If their is a moderator on here im reporting u.

:D Eish ... only respond if there is a simularity ... ?

Soooo true Tweak, If they (NP) cared one bit, they would've done their homework and realize that it'll be the worse decision ever.

There was a goverment of National Unity... but after 2 years the NP walked out... out of frustration... sadly
But both of you should now this?
I agree on the homework issue

Gee... thanks... but we can do better... seriously... we're still pretty slow or lazy around here... hope Zille kicks butt :D

Think we're talking about CT really... other than that the WC hasn't changed much... so the ANC did fockhol as usual
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Other than that... I think we are in for blooming times in the WC... and hope we all produce and share in its growth :)
Lets just hope and pray that Zille can pull the WC... then SA... out of the Sh*t/Racist position it finds itself...
of course this will happen after corruption is rooted... and we know how long that can take... other than that... I wish her well ;)

Wow the racism people can get away with here is frightening. Sure, there are very few blacks who can run a country properly considering the masses of uneducated, stupid ones but that has nothing to do with them being black. There are enough clever, educated ones but the uneducated masses would never vote for them. Its all about environmental conditioning, education. People need to be taught how to think properly in a way that fits in with a capitalist 'western' first world country. Its not something you're born with and it will take a few generations to catch up. Black Africans were very happy in their Kraals before we forced them to adapt so now the white man will suffer while the new top dogs try to figure out how a country works. That's just how it works and we have to accept it. We are different but we're all the same. We all just care about our own asses.

I think people are overly negative. Everybody knew the ANC was going to win and that Zuma would be President, so why now that it has happened does everybody scream bloody murder? Surely this can't be surprising? The question was always whether they would lose enough support to miss their 2/3rd majority. They did, and that's a very good sign. People have sent a message to the ANC that if things continue along the same lines they will lose support.

The ANC might be celebrating but behind closed doors they will also be discussing why they lost support practically everywhere. This is a good thing.

People have been predicting Zim 2.0 for many years now, so far nothing has come of it. In reality South Africa is a very different country to Zim. We have very active and vocal minorities here and a Constitutional Court that for the time being still seems to be functioning properly. We also have a lot of powerful people with a lot to lose. It just wouldn't be as simple to get away with it as it is in Zim.

JZ is not the ideal President, we all know that. But I really doubt whether he or anybody else would want to turn this country into Zimbabwe. If his administration doesn't deliver they WILL lose more vote in the next election. They could conceivably lose the Northern Cape, Eastern Cape or Gauteng to a DA / COPE alliance in the next election, while losing another 4 or 5% nationally.

Also, large numbers of people were not bullied or intimidated into voting for the ANC. If they were it would have been all over the newspapers like Zim. They'd be interviewing bloody people with sad stories all over the place if this was the case. People went out and voted ANC mostly because they either felt it was the right thing to do or they are too uneducated to make a proper choice and voted with their hearts.

In many ways what this election showed was that it's taking very long, but slowly people are starting to think.

I think a huge problem is also that you can only vote in the area/district where you live. There are many people that were unable to vote due to this. Business people travel all the time and you honestly can't fly from CT to JHB and back just to vote.

They should change this so that you are able to vote anywhere in the country. If their system is working 100% it will not cause problems as you need your ID to vote.

ou yelled at people for not following the news for the last 15 years yet you seem to have missed the simple fact that you could vote anywhere in the country. If you were out of your province you could only vote nationally. AND, if you knew that you would be away you could apply for a special vote.

Please don't think that only business people are away from home - there are many, many migrant workers in this country.

My Friend???!!! Excuse me but YOU don't qualify to have that title... I don't have losers for friends! Now quickly run and crawl back into the hole you came out of!

You can tone down your language. It is actually possible to have an argument/discussion without turning nasty.

People cannot even walk through a turnstile properly.

Standing in the queue at the Bank yesterday morning I was observing the people entering through the turnstile and realised that we have a long way to go in this country in educating the masses in really simple things like using mechanical doors for one thing.
How difficult is it to walk through a turnstile. Just clasp the handle and push.
People were standing back looking in puzzlement while others were trying to push it the wrong way. It was actually very funny but in the same vein it brought home the reality of the population living in this country.

Do you realize or even know that they will from this year have the power to go and change EVERY SINGLE LAW that was ever laid down? YES, that might not bother you but wake up and smell the coffee because it involves you too!

Um, no. They don't have that power any more, thought they did from 1999 - now. And hell did not freeze over.
Before 1994 I cannot EVER recall doctors, police, medical staff, government staff or Anyone else for that matter take to the streets and striking!
Perhaps you were too young to remember, but it did happen. Apart from strikes we also had to deal with rolling mass action, a virtual civil war in KZN, the townships being made ungovernable etc. We still have problems today, but these pale in comparison to the problems that that we faced 15 and more years ago.

You can vote anywhere. If you were outside the province in which you registered, you wouldn't have been able to vote in the provincial elections, but you could've voted in the national elections from anywhere in the country, as long as you were registered.

Like kingmonty pointed out, we did have a coalition govt. You think Buthelezi got to be minister of home affairs based on his charisma and strong record of getting things done? :D [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Government_of_National_Unity_(South_Africa)]
I am not a racist and have many friends from other cultures and races.
Some of my best friends are Jewish...
I've never heard anyone who is not racist trying to defend themselves like this.

I really enjoyed this post. But tell me, what do you think will happen after 2-3 generations and the Gold has run out in the country? Would we become the second DRC ?

The ANC-led Government of National Unity, headed by Nelson Mandela, included members of the NP and IFP, members of different races and faiths, and women

Was this like some sort of student exchange program? Because that is not what I was talking about..

I ment the anc should have had the power to influence the NP after the elections. Instead of being in the driving seat..

ROFL.

Why should the ANC with >60% support not have lead the GNU?

De Klerk was deputy president, far more than the NP really deserved, looking at their results from 1994.
