Hi Guys,

Have some questions, hopefully you guys can assist.

I'm looking into getting ADSL (finally) and will require to use it for the following purposes.

1. Local Gaming (FPS)
2. Browsing (local & international)
3. Media Streaming (Radio / youtube / etc)

I am prepared to spend about 800 to 900 monthly (line rental incl).

Could anyone suggest a good ISP which can provide me with what I am looking for.

Kind regards
:D

I don't trust the prices on www.hellkom.co.za because last time I checked it was basically useless as many didn't include VAT so the options that seem cheaper aren't always so.

Your best bet would be to have a look at offers from each ISP you're considering. Such as Axxess, Webafrica, Openweb (lots of complaints though). Do a search for their name and see what kind of results you get to give you an idea before deciding and avoid any long term contracts.

Oh I just want to add, don't do something like use the email provided by the ISP, if any, because it will only cause problems sooner or later, go get a free email account somewhere.

1. Local Gaming (FPS)---Buy 30 gigs local only bandwidth, as a top up, from webafrica or another ISP for only R130.

2. Browsing (local & international)---Telkom Do3 is a good package, as from 1 August for some international gigs with your line rental. Use the local only bandwidth that is included, for local browsing.

3. Media Streaming (Radio / youtube / etc)---Use the Telkom Do3 international bandwidth untill finished, then top up only, with international gigs as and when you need it, at about R55 per gig from various ISPs.

International bandwidth is used from the start of the account. Then local only. Use Routesentry, if you want to split the local only and international only bandwidth use.

Keep an eye on the forums...Price drops might just be starting...

I see some uncapped options from "axxess" for R899 (as advertised on myadsl.co.za), and openweb for R1299'ish for uncapped...

Nice thing about openweb is i wont be home during the day, but can still go bananas on the downloads... no thresholds or anything....

What about those?

ow, and yes - helkom prices aren't the best to be honest. I've called up 3 ISP's already and say there prices differ from that on helkom - suppose i could be a good citizen and report faulty prices.. but can engage on that once I actually get my internet line :P

yeah - was just gonna say, was looking at axxess and it shows their express connection (not the express+), goes through satelite... but not sure if i'm right here... but local gaming doesn't go through satelite? that goes through our local network infrastructure (copper/fibre).... it's international gaming that will suffer? correct?

Hehe! That's why splitting it all up is best. :)

lol lol.... true, but ok hang on a sec...

So, let's summarize
1. ADSL cost : 899 (Axxess) 384 (5GB threshhold)
1.1 What speeds do I get converted to once i reach the 5GB
1.2 Will 384 be sufficient for games (eg. Counterstrike / Battlefield)
1.3 Will the throttled speed be sufficient for games (eg. Counterstrike / Battlefield)

2. ADSL Line Rental : ?? (Telkom) ??
2.1 Costs?
2.2 Speeds for line required associated with ADSL Account speed
2.3 Wimax (Wireless) / Copper? (line-based) for my requirements (gaming, streaming..etc)

:) :)

1. ADSL cost : 899 (Axxess) 384 (5GB threshhold)
1.1 What speeds do I get converted to once i reach the 5GB---192 if on 384...basically half speed.
1.2 Will 384 be sufficient for games (eg. Counterstrike / Battlefield)---Yes
1.3 Will the throttled speed be sufficient for games (eg. Counterstrike / Battlefield)---Yes
Most online games can operate at dial up speed but some may require better than 56k, or dial up speed.

2. ADSL Line Rental : ?? (Telkom) ??---About R130
2.1 Costs?---Do3, Total around R550
2.2 Speeds for line required associated with ADSL Account speed---384 is the lowest you would be able to get.
2.3 Wimax (Wireless) / Copper? (line-based) for my requirements (gaming, streaming..etc)---Up to you. Some are latency fanatics and want the absolute best speeds...no staggering of the frames at all...Line for best latency. :)

Lightscribe, awesome help- Tx...

But now, top of them all.... ISP questionnaire ;-)

We got Openweb, Axxess, TelkomInternet, .... (and the list goes on).
Keeping all the above in mind, and wanting a "ok" Q.O.S (yes, I'm willing to admit SA has problems with Service Delivery, so I can take a knock on delivery issues until further notice, what ISP is best bang for the buck...

So to give you a headstart -
openweb - Runs out of a home? By a kid? Although as AWESOME offers and low prices, I must say this one gets me going quite a bit
Axxess - alot of talk around town, ok prices I suppose - don't know much history about them
Telkom - Well well, good old telkom - I'm sure out of all the ISP's, telkom still rubs us the right way above all in terms of quality, ALTHOUGH they are extremely pricey and from what I hear - their after service/helpdesk is worse than finding your wife in bed with another guy - extremely annoying.

Any hints/tips/advise :-) this is the final question, promise ;-) ow ow, before I forget, what about that neoflex too.... keep it in mind :P

Pleasure :)

Hehe! Neotel sucks, untill they eventually finish their cable laying...about 2050(Joke)...From what I have read here, their service and products suck.

Telkom doesn't deserve our money, but at least their products work most of the time.

Openweb has problems with openbrowse. The rest of their products though, seem to have few complaints. They are soon to release very cheap uncapped packages. End of month, from what I can gather.

Axxess is great all round, but just take look at threads here for complaints. I have come accross some.

I'd go Telkom for the line, adsl and modem.

Then Openweb for a cheap uncapped package.

If needed for SAIX gaming, Webafrica or another ISP for 30gigs local bandwidth at R130. :)
