Finally did it - cancelled DSTV

oh what I would do for a DSTV sport package:love:. Not even asking for much. 7 channels is all I want.

Willing to pay compact subs for this....And I know I am not the only one who would enjoy a sports only package.

SO and I hardly watch TV and when we do its mostly sport.

You are not alone. And Multichoice don't care.

Supersport apparently is what keeps Multichoice afloat !!! Their normal broadcasts are so crap most folks would'nt bother with them.

DSTV is perfect for the 1st 6 months, then its all repeats, forever.

Things will get interesting when their sports agreements come to an end. I just hope that for the sake of the pay-tv industry in this country, Top TV can get their asses in gear to ensure that Multichoice don't receive exclusive rights to most of the sporting codes.

Actually, if you are a F1 car lover, superbikes and MotoGP then yes you are forced to get the premium package from DSTV. Even now, to this day.

That argument could be used for anything actually. For instance, if you're a Big Brother Africa fan (which I hope you're not, I certainly aren't), you're also forced to get premium. And, for the ADSL alternative advocates, I'm pretty sure you can't download that. My point is, if you really love something that much, you shouldn't (1) complain about the cost and (2) celebrate when you cancel your service. No matter how much bitching and moaning happens on these forums, it will not change (unless there's serious competition, and that's not TopTV) so for your sport or BBA fix, suck it up and pay ... or cancel and don't make a big deal about it. IMO.

You do actually get sports packages for commerical subscriptions but laughably, they are more than premium.

It's like the Telkom/Netotel situation. Until such time as (1) the competition has facilities that meet or exceed those of the monopoly, and (2) their internal administrative issues are resolved, the monopoly will remain intact. I doubt that SARU, SARFU and CSA would pick a competitor over Supersport until they know that (1) they can provide the same level of service or better, (2) have the same or very similar number of subscribers, and (3) provide broadcast services at the same or better cost.

Now I have to sell my UEC PVR.... dammit - I spent over R4,000 last year setting up my house for two HD rooms... oh well, guess I'll make it back by not have DSTV for 6 months.

But what then if half the sport I watch is on TopTV and the other half on DSTV?
That's why they need to ensure that DSTV does not receive exclusive rights to the most popular sporting codes (rugby, football, cricket, F1), because Multichoice will definitely see to it that Top TV doesn't receive exclusive rights. It's wishful thinking, I know, but what other alternatives do we have?

If we go with your scenario, then the status quo won't change as long as one provider has a grip on 90% of the pay tv market. If it comes down to that, then we'll have to prioritise which sports are more important to us. Providers will then have to look at ways of luring customers back to them.

Good point.

When we don't have DStv here I use a friends smart card number on the Supersport website for streaming F1 and cricket etc.

I similar thing happened to my mom. She doesn't get the invoice any more and got cut off a few months ago. They wanted her to pay the reconnection fee as well. I spoke to the operator and they seemed adamant that she had requested electronic billing, which she had not. They then connected the service again and promised to reinstate reminders.

Now yesterday it was cut off again with no notice and a R50 reconnection fee!!

I suspect they are making some profits off of the fees and the call charges. Maybe time to check out TopTV?

I always love the way people who cancel DSTV make such a big deal about it, getting their freedom etc etc. Last time I checked, we have a consumer society and it's always your choice whether or not to pay for entertainment (with the exception of TV licenses) and you always have the option of going with the competition, whether that be another operator or switching to purely online consumption. I'm sure people are happy either having the extra cash every month or not paying it to a company they consider monopolistic but come one, nobody forced you in the first place.

Its a question (inter alia) of entrapment thru monopoly such as the only source for certain national sports events.

I asked for the electronic option ages ago... although I never check for statements.... I just did a search in Gmail... only mails I've received from them this year
1.) Statement - 6 June
2.) DSTV HD PVR Owner - 10 May
3.) Statement - 10 Mar
4.) Statement - 8 Feb

(this includes a search of SPAM)

I thought this was limited to MWEB 4mb uncapped accounts, or can anyone with a smart card number make use of this?

I cancelled DSTV in December, then went one step further and disconnected the aerial for sabc feeds, so no telly AT ALL! :) It took a week or 2 for me to get used to not having the telly on as background noise but I'm used to it now! It's awesome, mainstream TV is full of utter crap and the news only reports negative stuff and generally made me feel bad. My mood has lifted considerably since I dont do tv anymore, more social too! I must admit I do miss the F1 cars and Superbikes quite a bit though!

+1 and good choice to ditch dstv! :)

+1 - 4 years now and counting - no DSTV, no SABC ---bliss. For those special games we all get together at a friends house.
