Finally, it’s actually looking like full mobility

WOW!!!

Can't wait! Looks if mobile phones is going to be our only thing we will have to to anything we want in the future. It's brilliant! :D:)

Any mobile phone worth more than a few hunderd rands should be able to provide you with internet access on your computer/laptop.

Even a Nokia 2630 which costs about R700 thesedays can be used as a modem and while it's packet radio is limited to EDGE class 6 (177kbps) it is still acceptable for web browsing.

What is the point of the article? This has been possbile for years. Are their actually phones that do not allow you to use their internet connection on your computer/notebook?!

Think you misread the article. It's basically about the form factor of netbooks being a better compromise between MMI / mobility. And with built-in wireless, it becomes even easier to use.

Yeah, I'm lost too...

"Until quite recently notebook computers, despite the mobility they provided, generally had to be tethered to an Internet connection via a cable"

uh, bluetooth...

"However, some fine-tuning is still required before you will be able to carry just one device to meet all your computing and mobile needs."

You'll never carry one device. I don't know a single person that doesn't carry a cellphone, and I don't know of a cellphone that has a comfortable qwerty keyboard.

Also the restriction is the battery, I've bought a 6 cell of my wind and that still only lasts 5 hours.

Side Note: All of this was possible back in the day when I had my original netbook, baring the wireless because that wasn't around...

Having two sim cards, one for the phone and one for the built-in wireless, is not easier at all.

Have to agree with Roux...
If I want really portable I've got my cell phone, if I need a mobile workstation I have my laptop. The 2 works perfectly together for years... where does this gadget fit in???

Right in-between actually.

The reason why there will never be one single converged device is that everyone has a different set of requirements when it comes to functionality and compromise between mobility and suitable user interfaces.

So for you, the laptop / phone combo works. But for others (myself included) it does not. This is not to say someone must be wrong (only our beloved Roux believes his way of doing things is the only correct way. :))

Netbooks provide a new form-factor that will appeal to many people on the go, especially at the price-point.

the iphone doesnt let you share its connection!
Go figure.... I think BlackBerries also suffer from this fault. Seems like fruits just aren't proper phones :D

Well as stated, even basic models of Nokias (2xxx range) has that functionality and it is via Bluetooth so you don't even have to take the phone out of your pocket.

It is much easier that whay because now you have 1 sim, 1 contract, 1 bundle (that does not roll over) to deal with.

2 devices that is allready there...

HTC touch Pro (Hardware Keyboard) and HTC touch HD (Software Keyboard, bigger screen).

This is the best in PPC's at the moment. Working with lots of emails and text messages is flawless.

Allso support touch flow like IPOD.

Agree, although the HTC (Kaiser) can be sluggish at times. I flashed mine with the Diamond ROM and installed the touch Flo 2d cab.

Now it's like owning a new, highly functional toy!
- Can play XVID
- Tom Tom Navigator
- MobiBook reader
- Usual office apps + email
- Can't think of a better 'menu system' than touch flo

Still looking for a good web bowser besides the default PIE one ~ tried Opera, Minimo. Firefox launch Fennec next week for the HTC touch (wm6) - that should be interesting.

Would be great if they port Google Chrome to WM6 but that probably won't happen; Google seems to want to bundle it with Android.

Netbooks definitely fit the gap between mobile phones and laptops; waiting to see how this space unfolds towards the end of 2009.
