I posted this in the FF forums but no response so thought I'd try here :D

I upgraded to FF3 yesterday (or the day before) and thought alles was hunky dory until I realised that it's munching some heavy bandwidth. Every 1 or 2 minutes I lose about 200-300kb for no reason whatsoever (no page refresh, nothing updating, etc) and it only does it if the browser is open ..... close the browser and the connection stays idle for ages. Please, if anyone can give any info about this, it would be appreciated. I just want to see if there is a solution otherwise I'm going back to FF2 :o

I'd recommend you download Ad-Aware, Spybot search and Destroy, HiJack this..
Also I would recommend you open up your Command Prompt, Start - Run, type CMD.
type: netstat -n

I have plenty security, trust me .... nothing has been picked up. Besides, once infected, it's not going to choose to do things only when the browser is open no? As for the 'netstat -n' thing .... no clue what that even is :D

That sounds interesting Mephisto. I also have Firefox3 but have never really paid any attention to the bandwidth usage. I am going to open the browser this afternoon when I get home and just leave it for a while to see if I get the same.

I am slowly but surely being put off FF3...
The memory issue is hardly any better than FF2 and Firebug (my most important plug-in) doesn't work properly. Making changes in Firebug reflects on all other webpages and cannot be undone unless the browser is restarted :(

Dude i suggest you get a "Real" firewall that can show you this stuff.

The minimum requirement being the ability to view "active connections" PER APP, PER REMOTE CONNECTION it's making and the amount of data going up/down.

A free one that can : Comodo Firewall
A paid one i'm using : Agnitum Outpost

Point is, i can see exactly in my firewall that Firefox 3 is connecting to gmail.com [because i have gmail open] , that it's connecting to mybroadband [because i'm typing here now] and so on for each tab.

Alternately just do a "netstat" in command prompt and see what connections are open. Sometimes it's some add-on trying to update....

My NetLimiter does not show Firefox using much when it is idle... so I think you can definitely rule out "normal behaviour".

What add-ons are you using?

Oh, in my case...i have the Google Toolbar...so i have an additional connection going all the time [even if i'm doing nothing]. The Google Toolbar checks my gmail, it links directly to my Google Bookmarks [i store all my bookmarks online] and there's some other things it does too...all means downloading some stuff.

So make sure you don't have something like that going.

I also have all that... but it uses nowhere near what he is talking about.

Do you have a lot of RSS feeds in FF...?
... nope, none

.... I use Sygate ..... I can see the traffic but it just shows MyBB.

What add-ons are you using?
... only AdBlock Plus

Definitely not normal behavior, do you have a network status/external IP add-on?
... nope.

Thaks for all the replies so far .... hopefully with the added info you chaps can make it right ;):D Oh and please some explain this 'netstat' thing in command prompt :o

Run it? It's quite obvious. It shows you "source -> destination" connection. Basically a simple display and what your firewall should be showing you per app. netstat doesn't show the app making the connection, but at least you can see -where- your pc is connecting to.

oh ok ... just did it but I get the info from my firewall already.

Interesting problem. It really made me forget about TK for a moment... ;)
I haven't experienced anything like this before. Not even with IE (back in the day). FF3 caches a lot of memory, so it will still appear to use a lot of memory.
But 200kB every now and then, that's quite a lot.
You don't maybe have spyware or something exploiting FF? Take a look at your cookies in FF and delete anything funky or ahem.... something you don't want others to see.
