Firefox 4 closes on final release

Awesome. I liked the feel of the beta.

Also, they pushed a patch today I think that cuts cold start-up time by like 50%.

Best of all the context menu order is now switched like Chrome so that Open in new tab is at the top. :)

Really like the new version too, suprised that they haven't adapted some of the features which extensions offer into the build itself. Like statusbar downloader and flashgot.

After 3 weeks I still couldn't get used to having the tabs above the url bar, so I switched it back. Also, FF4 kept freezing and crashing on me, so for now I've changed back to FF3.

The FF4 Beta I've been using hasn't given me any trouble yet, Can't wait for the proper release.

On a sidenote that picture is awesome!

Type in about:config in the URL bar and I'm sure there's an option somewhere there to set the location of the tabs.

you go to View/toolbars/& check or uncheck "tabs on top" for however you want it

FF4 is great, but i don't really like the new "add-ons manager" - so big & all over the place ..... the small popup from v3 is great to quickly set what you want and get on with it

I've been using FF4 for a while now, I find it hard to go back to FF3 :/

The issue with Linux acceleration is a prime example of where ideology hits into practicality.

If some of the ideological OSS proponents were more supportive of proprietary additions (such as drivers) instead choosing to be derisive and exclusionary, Linux would have a far better driver situation than it does today - especially on the 3D graphics front - and would arguably be friendlier to configure as a result.

Good job on linking to a high-level overview explaining how GPU acceleration is implemented in Chrome, without delving into any of the technical issues on different platforms. A much more detailed breakdown of how and why hardware acceleration is broken in Linux can be found here: http://linuxhaters.blogspot.com/2008/06/nitty-gritty-****-on-open-source.html

Most pertinent quote: "The nvidia driver is the only one out there that actually has full OpenGL support." Since Chromium only uses GPU acceleration when necessary, whereas Firefox 4 uses it for the entire page, I imagine this lack of OpenGL support would be more of a problem for the FFox devs.

I will be using the old Firefox for a while yet.
I use Chrome for speed and simplicity.
I use Firefox for its versatile and powerful plugins and FF4 doesn't have enough community developed plugins yet.

I think the title of this article was heavily biased. I would hardly term it 'stumbling'.

Where's my status bar and why do my fonts look crappy and different to FF3 and Windows in FF4?????
