Firefox downloads highlight digital divide

Hopefully when Firefox 4 is released the picture will look much better for us! :(

So was the record broken?
(The article was not very clear with that 11 millions downloads statement)
Is that currently 11 million Firefox downloads or the current record for downloads in 24 hours?

Anyone know how many people in South Africa, do use FIREFOX, I am thinking in the region of around 50 million people or less.

I am glad, South Africa is making a present :)

All thats due to Telkom were so far behind!

The FF DD was a good marketing campaign, but they can't quite claim its the most downloads in 24 hours.
When MS release a patch there's a few hundred million downloads of it within the first 24 hours.

you can say the same thing for FF updates

Yes, the record now stands at 8.3 million downloads in a 24 hour period. The MS patches don't count since they are not considered a full program.

Call it number of non-automated downloads then.

Remember when Microsoft said: "We can't let you download Vista, it would break the internet!" Hah, the Internet Explorer team even sent Mozilla a cake to celebrate Firefox 3:

Anyone work out how much download day would have cost if the Mozilla servers were all hosted in South Africa? They were pushing 2 Gigabits a second of pure HTTP traffic
plus 13 Gigabits a second or so of download traffic. Would it be more or less than the South African GDP for a year?

It would be interesting to compare the download figures with how many households have computers in each relative country.

True, we are not a Tech savvy continent...

But im still proud we got such a high number :D

is there a comparison on used browsers ff vs ie vs opera?

Great link, thanks - adds a human element to the madness :)
The cake was prolly cyanide laced tho lol... just kidding

This comparison is bordering on retarded. It closely resembles comparing strawberries and melons!

Oh and personal note to the author of this article.... Africa is de facto 3rd world in any sense of the word. And if you haven not figured out, ur wake up call has just arrived.

Bar few million European settlers, Africa is still climbing social emancipation ladder.

Agreed, it is a very weak comparison.
Also didnt factor in African Apathy.

I'm not sure you can compare Africa to Australia. Okay they're both continents. But one of them has extensive broadband connectivity and an education system. The other has this thing called SADC.
