Hi folks

Here is the latest information regarding Firefox usage:

MS Internet Explorer: 63.9 %
Mozilla: 30.4 %

I think it is quite significant that Firefox cracked 30%, and I do not see this growth abating.

Regards,

RPM

Hmm rpm I'm interested to know how the stats are calculated, reason being that most of the top MyADSL contributors are using Firefox, just wondering how much that affects the numbers.

Yeh maybe it would be more like 20% if ic stopped using Firefox....
Doesn't ic still use IE

As an aside, don't you think its stupid that Opera identifies itself as IE by default? That means we'll never know for sure how many Opera users there are.

ic uses Firefox as far as I know, he has for a while... and yeah it is pretty crazy that Opera identifies itself as IE but I think that's a legacy from the days where pages existed that would check the browser and refuse to render on anything but IE.

Its scary that anyone still uses IE, instead of firefox - the few times I need to load it up, it seems to just open a floodgate for endless bugs, trojans, spyware to come pouring into my pc.
Sorry but FireFox is THE internet killer app, as opposed to Microsoft's PC deathtrap known as IE.

Never underestimate Microshaft

we all love to hate billy and microsoft don't we?

i just migrated to firefox, and i must agree, it is an absolutely fantastic browser. i have folders on my links folder, so when i want to read the 'news' i just click on the folder, and tell it to open all the bookmarked sites in tabs.

then i open a new window, and open all the cricket and soccer websites in another window

i mean that is SO useful, for studying, working etc.

having raved about the product (lawd... why do we love skinning things so much!?! :D )

i do worry about microsoft's reaction. IE has long been a little pimping tool for them, a method they use to capture the unsuspecting new internet user who knows nothing and happily surfs mymsn and enjoys it...
[confession: i have a customised mymsn as a home page  )

the thing is, if you were bill/ms, you'd see the popularity growing, you have unlimited funds to throw at the thing. they MUST be working on a new generation browser.

what do you guys/gals think they're gonna do?

i reckon they going to go for msn chat integration, turn IE into a kind of communications hub that can drive everything on your system (if you're using xp). i think they'll probably also start talking to ie users, and asking them what improvements they want.

i dont believe that they're just going to sit back and allow anyone to erode their market share. its also been a long while since we've seen a new generation browser, i have this sneaky suspicion that something is brewing there.

comments?

There's a long history here.

Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 was the killer internet app - they realised that somehow they had misread the popularity of the internet after their disasterous internet explorer 3.0 and went full steam ahead and produced a glorious piece of sofware.

They strengthened that with version 5.0 and mortally wounded Netscape.

Now they rest on their laurels, having achieved through sheer Desktop share, critical mass with Internet Explorer 5 years ago.

The upstart Firefox is making a small dent in the market, but nothing microsoft need to worry about.

Their next iteration will have Tabbed browsing and the masses will rejoice and wonder why nobody thought of it before and tell each other how clever microsoft is.

Same old same old.

But I, for one, welcome our new Firefox Overlords.

I think Microsoft are going to hit back with Internet Explorer 7.
I use Firefox, but I think Microsoft has a plan.

Yes, it's called copying.
and its been Gate's modus operandi since day 1. Remember Apple?

I would love to see how these stats change once IE7 is available, I suspect that many users will return to IE. Although if the MSN Toolbar with "tabbed" browsing is anything to go by I will be sticking with Firefox for a long time to come.

I don't understand how anyone can still use IE. It's a total joke, security-wise ... using it should give you an equivalent feeling of comfort/safety as having unprotected sex promiscuously. It's not a case of 'if' you're going to get infected with something, but a case of 'when'.
