Firefox Usage on MyADSL

I have been using Netscape for over a year now, only keeping IE there for the times when I need to get onto a site that insists on using activex.

I upgraded to Netscape 8.01 and now I don't even need ie at all any more.

Netscape 8 has this nice feature which enables you to render pages like firefox and if it cannot due to activex controls asks you if you want to switch that page to ie rendition, while still blocking the pop-ups.

One of the prime reasons I used netscape was due to it cache capabilities, a lagacy from the old dail-up days when re-getting pages was was a pain.

One can set a common cache storage area and all users browsing on that computer gets the info from the cache instead of redownloading from the net, so it works almost like a cache server.

Me use IE again, I don't think so.
 
and wait till Google launches it's own browser (the rumours are too persistent not to be true)
 
I have seen people say that they use IE because FF doesn't render things properly and that they cannot use some javascript function or something - then I point out the M$ doesn't comply with (is it?) W3 standars and I get hte responce of A) So what? or B) well W3 sucks :mad:

Mmm - me thinks I am going to try netscape - I can't stand no offline cache in FF - also the IE rendering ....
 
i cant use ie, coz aol has bloacked it,thank *** for that!
i use firefox and no spyware.
If IE 7 did open, who would even use, lets be honest!
Mirosoft did nuhting for protection and they never will!

*Sigh* .. no wonder Bill Gates has so much money --- as they say, a fool and his money are soon parted. Don't people understand that using/demanding compliance with open standards in IT is the antidote to price gouging by monopolies?

Yes, it's W3 standards that IE doesn't support properly, e.g. IE's CSS support is broken. MS does this on purpose, so that all those gullible website developers make IE-specific webpages, which helps entrench IE. It's called "embrace and extend" (or "embrace and pervert") of open standards.
 
i use firefox to shaft microsoftballscock in anyways i can,im not tech savvy but maybe one day i could goto linux,would sure beat having the little microsoft pawn programs reporting to headquarters every 2 minutes,really dont feel comfortable with microsoft-its hardly very transparent u kno,like alot seems to go on in the background,i dont have anything to hide but its just not fair....fak u billiam u rich bastid give sum money to the starving ppl
 
The only thing I dislike about microsoft is their horribly proprietry attitude and lack of care for standards - for a very real reason - profit.

The latest I read is that Word XML is not going to comply with any of the existing standards used in open source applications, such as OpenOffice or Mozilla.

The reason is obvious - they want keep their monopoly on office software and they don't want apps like OpenOffice being able to open and save Microsoft word documents.

That's the side of microsoft that is ugly.

If anything threatens their market share, they won't play ball - you either play in their court, or they try to play you out of your own.

The sad part is 60-70% of pc users have a ms os.
I prefer linux bcoz its more stable and no glitches!;)

as long they cannot provide security, not a single and sane firefox user will ever change back....

ActiveX is the biggest invitation for all hackers, crackers, etc.
 
I think Firefox (and other non-explorer based browsers) will always be more popular with experienced PC users. Personally I'll never use IE ever again. Microsoft has already stated that IE7 won't fully support some of the W3C standards that other browsers have already implemented.

Thats Microsoft philosophy since I heard the first time of them and thats quite some years ago...*ggg*
 
No, Microsoft knew full well that their stuff was insecure from the start, but wanted to get to market very quickly, so they pushed it out the door and decided they would just "do damage control later when the s*** hits the fan". ActiveX was never designed to be secure initially because it was primarily just an application-level object model, but back in the late '90s when Java was growing rapidly and becoming a big threat ("Web as platform" combined with "write once run anywhere") MS needed a competing object model to allow people to build dynamic content into IE. They needed one fast, and because (as usual) they were years behind everyone already when they first realised where the market was going, they didn't have time to design and develop something proper, so they just took ActiveX and shoved it into the browser, tacking on a kludgy "trust model" that everyone in security predicted would be a disaster, but corporates didn't listen and home users just use whatever comes with their computer. Similar story for Windows XP --- their development processes are slow but they like to push out incomplete OSs every three years or so so they can keep milking that cash cow, so they pushed XP onto the market prematurely with the attitude "it's going to be a disaster, but we'll just do damage control (e.g. SP2) later". And so we had XP, the world's biggest security mess ever, and now we get to read about comforting incidents like nuclear power plant secrets being leaked by Windows viruses.
 
well, today we rolled out some new pc's at work and I managed to convince our lan administrator to put firefox on as well as i.e. on our default image (so the users have a choice). Score one for open source:-)

Firefox figures/adoption rates can be quite skew, e.g. most companies do not use firefox yet, even though the users personally use it at home. Usage stats for during the day should show a larger i.e. base. (if your target users are in the same time zone) and a pendulum effect at night time once users get home.
 
now we need to convince noone to use it...i was thinking along the lines of subliminol p*rn messaging

i have noticed one **** thing about firefox.

When I am capped certain local webpages dont load in firefox and when i enter the same address into IE it loads perfectly. Try www.funnel.co.za

Its strange
 
Its strange that a flash menu doesn't work on part of our school website - it sort of puts this big grey bar over the text were the menu pops up - sorry, can't link to it - secure site and i like my password as it is thank you :p
