Firefox usage

mozilla firefox is the bomb... as for thunderbird what a huge dissappointement.

Does anyone know if you can tell firefox to check a website for new content instead of caching cuz this is the only thing that bugs me.

Tools - Options - Privacy - Cache - Set it to zero.

Refresh the current page,you set your cache to zero,you won`t beable to look at the website if you are browzing off-line.

I dont't know why anyone (sane that is) would continue using IE. Every time you use it you get a "million" (well maybe not a million) spyware on your system. With Firefox you get ...zip...nada...It's the best.

... and if you find any sites that don't work properly in Firefox, blame it on the site developers, who haven't adhered to W3C standards and think that IE is the only browser around. I usually send a flame to the webmaster link (if I can find it) and never visit that site again. Not surprisingly, I've never had the courtesy of a reply from any webmaster...

Most companies never read mail addressed to webmaster anyway so you're probably just wasting your time.

I still use an IE based browser (Avant) with no problems and yes I have tried Firefox. It's going to be a while before sites start adhering to W3C standards so I'm sticking to what works with everything

Perdition, I am afraid I cannot agree with that view. I regard the sites that force me to use a particular browser with contempt! If I really need the info I will use IE but most of the time I just ignore the site afterwards.

Firefox is my browser of choice because it is simply the best browser out there and most sites do work with it.

antowan, I agree with you on that. Many "web developers", who got that title by reading one of those "X in 21 days", just do care about reading the spec on W3C's site and following that.

And that is why you get sites that states "optimized for IE 5.5"... you might as well create your own HTTP and HTML and develop a whole new browser...

I'm using Firefox on XP, only problems come with sites that are dependent of M$ Media Player and some of their plugins.

I like the tabbed browsing thing, but I wish I didn't have to right-click & select "Open Link in New Tab" from the context menu- yes I am that lazy.

Just "click" with your scroller on the link, and it will open that link in a new tab for you.

I have been using FF for a while now before it hit 1.0 status. It hasn't disappointed yet...

Upgrading along the line has been painfull though, but with 1.0-final its been sorted out.

Thunderbird is just what it says it is - an email/NNTP client. It isn't a huge giant that does everything - although there will be extensions soon enough that will cater for most of our wants [I remember a calendar extension for TB 0.8]..

I use TB at home for my mail and news, and FF for just about everything else http-related. Have been doing since TB 0.8, FF 0.6. No problems here...

avant uses the iexplore engine, so any security issues with iexplore will also effect avant, thereby defeating the object of secure browsing.

Rather support open source initiatives like the mozilla organisation - the simple reason being that they are standards compliant based and totally open and of course, because firefox kicks iexplore's ass in virtually every area

I use Avant as well and sorry to say Firefox doesn't kick its ass (for me anyway). I think the whole security issue with IE is blown way out of proportion simply because of its market share. It's basically a non issue for home users who have Windows Update enabled and personally I've never had any security related issues with IE. I agree that IE could be more standards compliant however one must remember that MS hasn't released a significant update to IE in a long time and my guess is this will only happen either when they release Longhorn or Firefox takes significantly more market share.

One should support initiatives based on their merits regardless of whether they're open source or not. Open source is not a magic bullet for the software industry.
