Hi all,

What server firewall would any of you recommend ? We have the choice of running MS ISA 2006 but I've always been more of a linux enthusiast. I setup a new blackbox running debian 4 (etch-kernel 2.6.18-4) with Shorewall as the firewall and squid as the proxy.

ipcop, smoothwall, pfsense(bsd), mikrotik - all worthwhile

I'm in the process of testing out Smoothwall Express v3 - a lot of improvements has been made so far... will give feedback when done so.

I used IPCop but I'm currently running Shorewall on Kubuntu.

Shorewall is a bit harder to admin because of the lack of a GUI but it's exceptionally powerful and I even got around to playing with policy based routing, packet mangling and stuff that you wouldn't be able to do from a GUI driven firewall like IPCop or Shorewall.

When it comes to networking *nix is normally a far better option with regards to stability, reliability and security. I've yet to come across a router or firewall from Cisco, Linksys, etc. that runs Windows CE or some embedded flavour of Windows.

I am quite impressed with pfSense, and currently administer four seperate systems. I also enjoyed IPCop (very easy to use)

Who still remember those 8-bit XT ISA slots? :D

For a home user or small business, Smoothwall or IPCop would suffice.

If you can afford it, ISA server, although for a simple home network ISA would be totally overkill - like a V8 engine in a Mini... :D

webmin for shorewall

Paul_S : Just install webmin on your debian box (and the required module ie Shorewall) and you will have a web based GUI to admin shorewall from windows. Have heard good things about smoothwall and will give it a try.

Anybody here used Securex b4 ?
