That's what Lupus is saying as well - that it needs to only be on certain days... lack of policing that is the problem of concern.
With proper planning as well :). In the old days they were held at schools or at places like the wemmer pan massive shows with fire teams and such ready.
Nowadays you've got amateurs sending up what could almost be a missile

No, because people have a right to set them off too. Just like you have a right to say you don’t want them. It’s a sensitive subject yes which is why it’s usually only allowed on certain days.
On specific days at specific times with specific guidelines.

Sadly can't agree there - if adult supervised, it needs to be allowed imo. There's only so much policing that can be accepted.

Used to be fine with it and even set off my own but today people are too stupid to use them safely.

Another factor may well be how many more people are letting off fireworks - Wed. night sounded like the last 5 new years combined :-/

That's New Years Eve, people don't need much of an excuse to blow things up

Doesn't happen where I live. It's not New Years Eve as the fireworks go off on the 1st of Jan, i.e. after midnight of the eve.

So some people enjoyed themselves. Cape Town had a few fireworks too.

Now it's all over. So for roughly 0.0114% of the year fireworks go off. For the remaining 99.9% of the year there are no fireworks.

A few??? It sounded like someone was recreating Saving Private Ryan

A few in Cape Town, more than average. It looked nice from a distance. And locally what you could hear from nearby people was no more than a car engine misfiring.

Spoken in utter ignorance. Good on you for learning jack shiat. Keep on ignoring the facts
Only fact I’m seeing from thread is the scourge of social justice warriors overcompensating about some crackers and Roman candles a couple of times a year because their pets haven’t been given a leader they trust and follow properly. Like I said, we grew up with many dogs and I set off maaaany fireworks all year round, and never once saw them cowering away. Even huge thunderstorms were no issue. Once the dog you’ve trained and lead see his owner not freaking out they follow the lead.

Even without leadership animals adapt. Ever been to India where fireworks are the next best thing to chai? These dogs are super fine and good luck telling people to stop enjoying it.

Some crackers and roman candles?? Saving Private Ryan had less pyrotechnic display and some were right near vets and animal hospitals.
It's also not only about dogs you muppet it's all wildlife, just once in your small sheltered little world go to a vet or animal shelter after a fireworks event, which is more then just once a year. It's about 5 times a year and sometimes they'll do it over two consecutive nights. If it was only a few crackers and roman candles sure but every small brained muppet tries to compete over who can make bigger boom boom you get fireworks fired off in residential areas that normally should happen at bigger events.
So nothing about social justice warriors which by the way isn't even relevant.
I had to go to a vet in 2023 New years day as my dog wasn't well. They had a few animals in surgeries after the fireworks, not just dogs animals...
Plus it's not only in South Africa it's all over the world

Yeah a few roman candles and crackers is an apt description for the scenes in and around my area.. promise.

Oh wait, no its not even close. The volume of stupidly large rockets and what would be borderline bombs if they weren't a hundred+ meters in the air was insane.

I could smell the "gunpowder" and my windows were rattling almost constantly for about 20 minutes, and fireworks had been going off since 8pm and continued until about 2:30am. And for reference, the nearest house to mine that was letting off any fireworks would have been about 150m or so.

I'm glad that there is yet another breakthrough in the Madeleine McCann case. That is the child loss case of the millennium.

But it's quite amazing that sophisticated and much simped for people like the Swiss can be this reckless. I guess we're all the same after all, even Germanic Swiss ubermenschen.

Saying this, the Swiss building safety measures seem to be deficient. The roof should not catch fire this easily and the escape should have also been easier.

I enjoy a good fireworks display! I have no objection if an okie blows his weeks wages on crackers rather than baby formula. I have no objection if said okie blows his hand off with said crackers.

The noise is irritating but we're all adults here and should be capable of getting over it?

What I do object to, is the significant and negative impact it has on domestic pets. This for me is definitely a bone of contention and primarily why I voted to ban fireworks outright.

Its more than just the domestic pets, its all the wildlife as well.

Ignorance.
What the heck makes you think Indian animals are cool with fireworks? What are you basing that nonsense on?
They have to be cool with it bc people set them off everywhere. They’re accustomed to it. And not just India, Thailand, China, etc etc. it’s really not the end of the world or worth getting your panties in knot over. Rather focus on the myriad of nuclear warheads and actual threats to our planet; that’s worth jumping on your social justice soapbox over.
