Two Hindu families – one from Glen Anil and the other from La Lucia – have laid charges against others in their neighbourhoods after they became targets when letting off fireworks for Diwali.

On Monday Vikram and Shiksha Roopnarain sought a protection order against a neighbour who allegedly shot at them with a paintball gun. They also found rubber pellets in their yard.

They laid a criminal charge against the man on the night of Diwali but now intend laying further charges against members of the Durban North Neighbours Facebook group after their home address – along with those of other Hindus – was published for letting off fireworks.

The Roopnarains intend laying complaints with the Human Rights Commission for insults hurled against Hindus by members of the group.

Businessman Prevan Naidoo, who lives in La Lucia, claims he was sworn at by neighbours. His address was posted on the Facebook group, and he lodged the defamation of character charge against members of the group on Monday at the Durban North police station.

“Their actions were nothing to do with the fireworks but racist. While celebrating I had several people come to my house and swear me, telling me that c*** are taking over La Lucia,” he said.

A member of the Facebook group suggested petrol bombing the homes of people letting off fireworks on the night of Diwali. Throwing eggs and faeces at their homes and ringing their doorbells in the early hours was also raised.

It ain't ToxicBunny. I know he lives in Pinetown.

Hope they admit to shooting fireworks in manner not covered by the relevant bylaws and can thus be fined...

I think you will find the ones shooting paint ball guns will end up in the jail cell.

if they hadn't been breaking municipal by-laws by letting off fireworks in a residential area, then this would never have happened?
there were plenty of fireworks displays taking place in various areas over that period, both for guy fawkes and for diwali too.

one wonders why the Roopnarains and Mr Naidoo feel so entitled that they can flout by-laws and give no consideration to their neighbours, or neighbours pets... and then run to the newspaper claiming "Racism Racism Racism"...

So you find paint ball pellets in your yard.

So how can you prove that these come from the neighbour, and which one?

Might be wrong on this, but I think there was a specified time allowed for fireworks to be set off, 18:00-20:30 IIRC.

You're right - I stand corrected. There was an agreed upon time from 18:30 - 22:30, or something like that.

I guess what annoys me more is the accusation of racism. I am not aware of any racist nature to these incidents; difficult intolerant neighbours who cannot see eye to eye - yes, but racist - no.

People understand that it is not the outcome of the accusation of racism that matters in this country, rather it is the accusation itself that is the most damaging - irrespective of the outcome. And this makes people prone to throwing it out.

If he had just called them anoosholes, then I think everyone would be in agreement. It's a really anooshole thing to do to shoot projectiles into a crowd of people, especially when there are children present, ever.
