The first A320neo has been completed following paintwork and mounting of a Pratt & Whitney 1100G-JM engine. The aircraft, MSN6101, is slated to begin ground tests in preparation for its first flight. A flight test campaign stars in September this year and sets the scene for the A320neo to enter service in Q4 2015. Airbus expects innovations like sharklet wing-tip devices to deliver a 15 per cent fuel saving and a saving of 3,600 tonnes of C02 per aircraft each year. - See more at: http://www.mro-network.com/news/2014/07/first-a320neo-completed/3375#sthash.6PrMEedE.dpuf

Looks so nimble

Shape is pretty similar, if not almost exactly the same as the A320CEO. Main difference is going to be the Geared Turbofans mounted on the NEO, and of course system changes and modest aerodynamic changes. More composites will be used also.

Here you can compare the two engines. The V2500 which is in use on the current A320's (you can choose IAE V2500 or CFM but for this I am going with IAE).

IAE V2500 FAN DIAMETER: 1,613 meters

PRATT AND WHITNEY PW1000G DIAMETER: 2.1 meters

I am 1.96 meters tall about, so I should be able to relatively comfortably stand up straight inside the Pratt & Whitney. This is now the biggest engine on narrow bodies.

SAA would like 20 of these please. Send the bill to taxpayers..

And 2 700 orders for it so far. Seems like everyone likes this one.

A320neo not even flying yet, and already Pratt offering improved engines again

LONDON—Airbus Group NV will introduce a 2% efficiency improvement on its A320neo single-aisle jets using Pratt & Whitney to satisfy continued airline demand for reduced fuel consumption.

The improved performance is due to be delivered from 2019, said Paul Adams, president of Pratt & Whitney, the engine arm of United Technologies Corp. UTX -0.71% Airbus recently rolled out the first A320neo with PW1100G engines, due to fly this year ahead of the model's service entry in 2015.

Pratt & Whitney competes for engine orders on the A320neo with the Leap-1A built by the CFM International joint venture of General Electric Co. and Safran SA SAF.FR +0.53% . The Leap-1A is due to follow Pratt's engine by about six months.

CFM International today announced American Airlines Group AAL -2.70% selected its engine type to power 100 A320neo jets, and the partnership also is poised to secure an order from Europe's second-biggest discount carrier, easyJet EZJ.LN -4.99% PLC. Mr. Adams said Pratt & Whitney is maintaining a market share.

Pratt & Whitney sells its PW1000G geared turbofan engine with other planes, too, including some from Bombardier Inc. BBD.B.T -1.07% and Embraer SA EMBR3.BR +0.92% . Mr. Adams wouldn't rule out the engine upgrade being made available to other aircraft, though this week's announcement to pursue the enhancement is limited to Airbus.

The efficiency gains come from a range of improvements to the engine, he said.

One of the company's engines in May suffered a major failure during ground testing of a Bombardier CSeries jet, damaging the plane and grounding the fleet. Mr. Adams said fixing the engines will involve "reasonably minor procedural and design changes," though he declined to detail the exact fault.

Bombardier President and Chief Executive Pierre Beaudoin said CSeries flights would resume in a few weeks and that first customer deliveries remain scheduled for the second half of next year.

Mr. Adams said the engine maker is checking what if any changes may be necessary to the PW1000G engines used on other aircraft.

The lengths these companies go to in order to improve efficiency is amazing. It isn't until you are actually standing between an old 737 and a 787 for example, that you realise just how much the technology has improved. Even the tiny bumps on the fuselage left by the rivets have been done away with by using new age composites.

Looks sweet from the outside, I just know it won't from the inside, when they cram 6 seats in a row. Sitting on top of one-another....

Brazil's Azul orders 35 Airbus jets worth $3.6 billion

PARIS (Reuters) - Brazilian airline Azul Linhas Aereas has placed a firm order for 35 A320neo narrow-body aircraft, Europe's Airbus said on Monday.

The order, worth $3.6 billion (2.3 billion pounds) at list prices, comes on top of 28 A320neo jets that the airline is leasing, it said.

The airline has selected engines made by CFM International, co-owned by General Electric and Safran.

Brazil's third-biggest airline unveiled plans in April to add 11 Airbus wide-body jets to start service to the United States from early 2015.

Airbus said on Monday these aircraft would be leased and the number of planes earmarked for international routes now stood at 12 - initially seven A330-200s, followed by five A350-900s.

Yaaaaayyyyy ..... and then BOOOOOOOO!

The A320s are extremely popular with the major airlines across Europe. Real workhorse planes. Huge amounts of them being used by British Airways, Air France, Lufthansa etc.

The 737-800s are only really in it here because Ryanair and KLM are flying them. Ryanair itself has about 300.

Perfect size, good fuel economy and with exactly the right range to cover everything from Ireland to Poland comfortably, and further if required. Improved fuel economy reaffirms this as the no-brainer purchase for European airlines.

Ockie do you have your pilot license yet

I have shagged 5 instructors already ... and each time they tell me afterwards that it would be irresponsible for them to give me my wings without me actually doing the course or some similar lame story. pfffft.

I already have my fairy wings ..... is it really that much more involved to fly a Airbus A380? Gooi the throttle all the way forward, wait for it to tell you to pull the hell up, pull the joystick back ... hoot if there are birds or some other senile pilot in his silly ol 737 that thinks he was there first and away you go! "beep beep" :D

citroens with pratt & whitney engines - now there's something !!!

That citroen with pratt & whitney engines is beating the 737 Max in performance. It is projected that the 737 Max with its CFM leap engines will fall about 5% short of its promised performance. The Airbus A320 with PW geared engines are exceeding its promises.
