First Blood Drawn - 360 vs PS3.

Like I said, I might feel better next week.
I'm hoping to get a working stable one when I exchange.
Have most of the issues like scratching disks, disk drives malfunctions and RROD been addressed?
I hope so, I really like the games I've played so far and would like to get into Forza 2 properly.
 
I'll be honest, I am more of a Playstation Fanboy :o, but I'll try to be as fair as possible in my next comment:

To be honest, yes, the PS3 does have quite a high price as compared to the other gaming consoles, and yes, there are very few games for the PS3 as compared to the 360. This would be mainly due to the fact that no developers really know how to utilize and don't even understand the "Cell" processor completely. This makes it very hard for them to develop games for the console as they have very little understanding of it, and this flaw can only improve over time.

However...

I think one of the other major turning points for the difference in system sales is the fact that both the Xbox 360 and the Wii have been hacked/cracked, and you can buy or even download games for about 1/8 of the price, if not nothing. Ok sure, many of the 360 gamers use their console for online play, but then again, there are many people who don't have internet fast enough to enjoy this service and/or cannot afford bandwidth to do this. They just use there consoles to play single player games, or maybe play some multi-player if they have a friend or 2 or even some family members to play with.

If you take this into consideration, the console becomes much like a PC for them where they would pay a once off price of about R2000-R4000 and then just pirate games for themselves. Yes, this is illegal as we all know, but it's proven that about 80% of people pirate games/movies worldwide.

This has a negative impact on the game developers themselves, but actually becomes a strong point for the console developer over time. As soon as an exploit/hack is found whether is be in the hardware or just the software of a console, the impact on the sales of the console is felt slowly, but surely over time, as more and more people begin to gain knowledge about this fact. The 360 has been hacked/cracked about 1 year ago already, and the Wii was hacked/cracked right after its release overseas.

Sony on the other hand, have not had their PS3 console hacked/cracked to date (to anyones knowledge) apart from a few little flaws here and there, and the possibility of playing PS2 backups by taking your console to pieces and fitting it together again.

So whenever this console gets hacked/cracked via hardware or software, allowing backup games to be played on it, the effect of sales of the PS3, will be felt slowly over the year, and hopefully, Sony can recover from the trap they're now in (selling consoles at a loss etc)

Anyways, that's just my 2cents :)

btw. Rumour has it that the PS3 could be hacked/cracked before the end of this month, but then again, it could just be a cruel April Fools joke :p

I swapped mine out in December and got a new HDMI enabled 360. I haven't had a minutes trouble with it so far and I play almost every night. Hopefully you can do likewise.

The games really are great fun and if you buy mostly pre-played and keep on swopping it is actually very cheap. R100 a game cheap! I take too long to play through games so I'm always behind the new releases anyway.

If it does I doubt you'll be buying the games from a fleamarket to be played off blu ray discs. The disc itself is just too expensive.

Analyst claims Sony worried of losing sales momentum

In the face of Microsoft's Xbox 360 price reduction, Sony will be feeling pressured to drop the price of its home console to continue recent sales momentum, according to analyst firm Strategy Analytics.

However, as with other industry experts, the company believes Sony is likely to wait until later in the year before cutting the price of the PlayStation 3 in Europe.

"Sony will be nervous that the PS3's recent sales surge may fizzle out now that the premium Xbox 360 undercuts the PS3 by GBP 40, and the cheapest Xbox model is almost half the price of the PS3," commented principle analyst David Mercer.

"Sony will be scrutinising the daily sales reports, but will probably try to hold out until later in the year before making its next price move," he said.

Following Microsoft's Entertainment and Devices division making a profit in the last two quarters, Mercer said that the company must continue to cut manufacturing costs to sustain profit.

"Microsoft must continue to drive cost out of console manufacturing in order to sustain these improvements in financial performance," he said.
