Its a multipath signal meaning there is not only one signal coming to your modem but more of a sphere of signal. The same applies with your modem as a transmitter. Thats why I say you would need to be inside the actual "blocked" zone to be cut off.

Also, you obviously need to be near a window or something or sufficiently far away from an "obstacle" for the above theory to apply. A block of flats in the way is not an obstacle. I have half a freakin city between me and the tower. My modem faces the opposite direction and gets good signal (faces as in, cantenna)

mit, you seem to be describing LOS signal. Where did all this physics stuff come from anyways [:)]

Yes, obviously. I didn't actually give a specific example of an obstacle that could occlude the tower, I was just referring to it hypothetically. I don't mean to imply that you need a direct line of sight, as the crow flies, in order to communicate with the tower; that's also obviously not relevant here.

a block of flats is an obstical, the signal bounces arround it.

We are talking about light, someone seems to think if i shine my torch at mithrandi it will avoid his ugly face and arc down to the floor.

This discussion is getting interesting on so many levels [:D]

I find the theory about a "blocking" device near the Union buildings a bit absurd though. Does anyone have any theories on the amount of output this thing would have to produce to disrupt a broad range of services on hundreds of different frequencies?

I suspect such a device would be extremely conspicuous. As in, probably the size of the arch at the union buildings itsself.

Actually cell blockers and other devices that achieve "ranged" interference are not THAT uncommon or unwieldly.

Everyone obviously realises that jamming is rather illegal in this country ;-) ... but

Its not a "theory". I only mentioned it since they said it on TV during the day. Since its the military and they needed to protect out president etc for some reason.. they could do whatever the hell they want illegal or not.
 
They probably used cable runs to get out of the "zone" and then parked the OB van in a clear area and sent from there. Or they used a high frequency on the uplink satellite. But its not unreasonable for them to have used a cable solution since its not like they were in the bush or something. I dont think the radius of this blocking thing was very big thus making the excuse from Sentech still not acceptable. Its not like they even emailed you (ha ha) or phone you and say "hey, please be advised your service will not work for x days"
 
I agree. I cant see how they think blocking cell traffic is gonna do anything. If I wanna bomb them I wont be stadning there with a cellphone.

Im not making this up dude. The did have a blocking device but I guess someone must verify it for us.
 
Actaully cellular has 2 main uses in terrorism:

1) Remote detonation of a bomb - it's the simplist thing around to wire the cap/firing mechanism of the bomb to the ringer of a cellular phone. Lets you be almost anywhere on detonation

2) Positional tracking - give a sniper/bomber positional updates of a target.

This is of course about as hypothetical as the concern SANDF had that the bridges surrounding PTA would be bombed. I'm sure those of you that travelled out there noticed the police on each bridge not to mention a few strategically placed mobile military bridges strewn around PTA...

If someone comes up with a pocket sized cellphone jammer with a radius of 3 metres, I'll be incredibly happy - just to block all the a$$holes who leave thier own table at a pub and stand next to yours blabbing away.

One time me and my mates were sitting in a pub garden enjoying a beer and this bloke saunters up to our table blabbing on his cellphone and struth god, sits down with his back to us on a spare bench at our table !

Well, needless to say, we all started talking incredibly loudly - but get this, the guy didn't even freakin' notice. Eventually we tapped him on the shoulder and told him what he was doing.

He was genuinly shocked - he didn't even realise we were sitting there.

So, where's that pocket sized jammer ! :)

Wow - nifty !
I liked the look of the cellphone jammer, altho £169.99 is way too steep.

I think I'll settle for throwing beer and food in the general direction of a$$holes on cellphones ! :)
 
As noone was / is always asking .. what is your firmware version on your modem as logic would suggest same problem at 2 diffrent sites/towers , then the problem should be with the modem
