Fishtanks

Oh that's nice! I've always wanted to get into this and try and setup a low maintenance tank, but I fear I'll lose interest. Also have no idea what to do with the fishies when I go on extended leave.

*sigh*

It's effort, don't do it unless you have a passion for it.

Two pieces of advise ...

1.-Read up on the fish before you get anything.
My personal freshwater pet fish are Cichlids [Click here yo get basic advice ] because they are highly intellegent and has a lot of colour variations .

2.-You will end up spending more than you originally plan on doing :o

Third but optional advice [Personal experience]
-Stay away from Albino variations.
Cichlids change their colour brightness depending on their mood.
Albinos has nothing to brighten or darken (patterns/color/stripes) , they will get bullied because they cant show their mood/aggression/dominance to other fish through darkening/brightening their colours.

Nice cichlids, when I lived in DBN had an eight foor tank with them. Was a pain, but a passion.

Nice tank.
Ive been wanting to get a tank again and specificly cichlids. I had fish for most of my life and I loved my Oscar it was very intelligent but someone babysitting it managed to kill it somehow.

Yeah just finished it this weekend. Put the Siamese in today and next week calico goldfish, shrimp and an eel

Other than movies or on TV, I haven't seen anyone with a fish tank in many years. Used to have one when I was a youngster. Too much effort in today's society though.

Trying my hand at this planted tank thing.

Huh?

Aquariums are infinitely less maintenance than the likes of dogs or cats or anything else really that moves.

Sure they take a bit of setting up but once that's done not really much to it.

Unless you take some serious extended leave it's not a problem.

Fish will go two weeks happily without any drama and even then you get feeder options if you really want to.

But you need to do your research. The first time and learning the science of it all can be tricky. Everyone thinks they are special and can do shortcuts because it doesn't apply to them, but most of the time they need to conform and start over.

Zyraz are those Victorian cichlids?

They don't seem strictly Malawian.

That last photo is especially great.

All African cichlids, variety of subspecies.
I was advised and read up on cichlids and from that it seems it's better to mix up the subspecies as long you don't mix African and American species.

True. Its actually a very low maintenance pet / hobby.
Getting automated gear will cost slightly more but if it gives peace of mind, it's well worth it.

Aah that explains it. Thought they looked Tanganyikan possibly as well.

Yeah I've mixed some of the Africans with Americans before. Just Severums and although they lived together fine it just looked weird.

Technically they have serious ph differences across species though.

it's a nice mixture of cichlids (when I used to keep fish, I had lots of those in my biggers fishtanks) those are mostly the mbuna variety (cave dwellers) so it would be nice to build some caves and crevices for them.

Agreed, once a tank is set up with proper filtration maintenance becomes very low. the idea is also not to overstock so you keep the waste low and oxygen levels high. One thing that did happen to my brother once upon a time, was he closed all his windows in his flat, but did not turn his tank heaters off - the flat itself got very warm and a lot of his fish died of stress
