Fishtanks

Aah that explains it. Thought they looked Tanganyikan possibly as well.

Yeah I've mixed some of the Africans with Americans before. Just Severums and although they lived together fine it just looked weird.

Technically they have serious ph differences across species though.
Mixing the subspecies gives your fishtank a variety of different temperaments and personalities.

it's a nice mixture of cichlids (when I used to keep fish, I had lots of those in my biggers fishtanks) those are mostly the mbuna variety (cave dwellers) so it would be nice to build some caves and crevices for them.

Agreed, once a tank is set up with proper filtration maintenance becomes very low. the idea is also not to overstock so you keep the waste low and oxygen levels high. One thing that did happen to my brother once upon a time, was he closed all his windows in his flat, but did not turn his tank heaters off - the flat itself got very warm and a lot of his fish died of stress
Yes @ cave dwellers.
Hence I could never do a plants /open space fishtank.

My cichlids love lots of different varieties of hideouts so my tank's decor might look slightly crowded compared to others.
Cichlids also likes to move stuff around in your tank to their liking so I gave them lots of varied shells etc to move around.
It's arranged to be viewable from varied angles so that the fish are still visible while hiding.

Dont have any now, but as a youngster, I built a center table for the lounge that was a tank with two Oscars.

It always raised a wow.

The lamp on the table was the tank light.

Now, I take the kids to uShaka - they are not really interested in maintaining a tank - which is a pity.

No marine setups?
Personally, I am waiting to move into my own property (rental at the moment).
I want to create a plumbing system to the outside of the house into a pump box (similar to what you would find for a swimming pool system) .

Would love to get a marine tank but it looks to complicated and expensive

Yeah.

Also just easier. :)

I bought a second hand tank and got a mixture of cichlids which was the end of my "purist" tank but much better for it.

Will dig some pics out later. Sold all my tanks when the baby was on the way for a lack of space but now that I'm in a bigger house I want to start it up again.

Possibly go marine this time.

Probably best to start with those "nano" types.

I think the learning curve is just expensive and is quite different so even veteran fresh water fish keepers make mistakes and it costs money.

Once setup and you know what you are doing probably not so bad, but still expensive.
