Five arrested for illegal march

"According to the reports, a group of about 200 people had gathered at Sea Point and then proceeded to the Pavilion Mall carrying placards and loud-hailers," Colonel Tembinkosi Kinana said in a statement.

although having seen it myself, i would cast serious doubt on "200" people, maybe 100, if even that.

Wow, this smacks of the Old government tbh :o

Illegal gatherings, wow haven't heard that in about 24 years

You do know that if you want to hold a march you need to get permission and organise security etc...

You can't just rock up with a million people and start to make nonsense... you aren't in in the EFF are you ?

Good. Illegal activity should not be tolerated. (Unless, of course, it is unfairly illegal, e.g. e-tolls. ;))

On the note of illegal protests, I wonder how many EFF protesters were arrested during this fiasco.

Or how many people were arrested during the recent countless (often illegal) protests we have had in SA, often including robbing vendors.

Or do the police only start arresting people when certain groups are involved?

This...

i very much doubt a "certain group" was targeted.
in this instance an arterial road was obstructed by an impromptu protest.
beach road is used by all emergency services ( as gdiza - an ems, provider can attest to).
the fire dept is also 50m from where the protest began, they, given the size of fire trucks, have little option but to use beach road.

the protesters in this instance, could easily have used the very wide promenade pedestrian walkway (or even the massive lawned area) but instead, chose to obstruct the road.

one of the reasons protests & mass gatherings require authorization, is to allows emergency services to make contingency plans in the event of an emergency & plan alternate routes for emergency vehicles.

The road was not obstructed, they were picketing on the elevated part of the pavillion.

The article is extremely in-accurate.

istly, it mentions a march.... there was no march. just picketing.

The picketers were asked to disperse, which they did.

They then moved to the grand parade, and were once again, whilst picketing told to disperse, they moved on... the arrests happened just below the bridge near Gardens Centre.

Whilst you're right, they would need a permit for an organised march, I don't think the same is required (permission) for picketing.

"illegal gathering" Bring on pre 1994!

@ EP27, at least 150,000 Muslims, Christians, Jews, Hindus, Atheists the whole bang lot! dont let the news reports tell you otherwise.

bs

i was on beach road at the time, at the intersection of beach & arthurs rd - about 200m beyond the pavillion when they came past.

they assembled at the pavillion above the swimming pool and proceeded along beach road, moving past the big open parking area towards the city
there were vehicles hooting & carrying flags obstructing the traffic moving alongside the protesters.

your source is both extremely inaccurate & dishonest.

it's all very simple.

apply for a permit.
permit will be probably be granted, stating date, times & venue - adhere to it and there will be no issue.

there have been many protests that have gone ahead in accordance with given permits - without problem.

this is on the opposite side of the road (camps bay bound traffic) not even the city bound side of the street where the bulk of the people were .sp.jpg

thats actually wrong - you DON'T apply for a permit unless the gathering or demonstration is at a court building, Parliament or the Union Buildings
you inform the municipality and failing their calling a section 4 meeting the notice becomes the conditions of the gathering* (effectively the permit)
ONLY if SAPS conceive of a problem may the municipality not put through the notice on the terms originally given and any prohibition or restriction is subject to a section 6 review right at the magistrates office

* regardless of anything else though SAPS retains under section 9 of the RGA the power to change the terms in order to preserve life and property

unfortunately the municipalities are the most horrendous abusers of the Act

The video's and pics I saw were all of the picketers on the Pavillion.

Just received word, all 5 were released without charge ... waiting for confirmation on this though.
