Kakamas - Five children were found dead in a disused freezer in their grandmother’s yard in Kakamas, Northern Cape police said on Wednesday.

Police spokesperson Major Dimakatso Mooi said the children, who were all cousins and aged between three and seven, suffocated inside the freezer.

“The children’s grandmother found them all suffocated inside an old freezer in the yard. It is believed the freezer locked accidentally while the kids were playing inside it,” said Mooi.

“The police appeal to parents or children’s caretakers to take responsibility in ensuring their children’s safety at all times.

“Children should not be left unattended, and yards must be cleared of old equipment and scraps that can cause harm to children,” Mooi said.

My parents still have these box freezers with latches on them for locking with a padlock.

I'm suspecting it is the same type and when the lid dropped it probably got stuck and they could not get it open.

Wow .. thats terrible, and yesterday Clermont in Durbs, 4 children got stuck in an unused old car. Two of them succumbed to heat... My heart flipping breaks hearing these stories...

I can only hope they didn't know they were dying until they became unconscious. Got stuck in a fridge when I was 6. I remember not even realizing I was in serious shutte and just kept pounding on the door for fear of the dark. Luckily my brother was nearby.

Only years later thinking about it did I realize my number was up that day. I didn't even know.

Poor little things. RIP.

This is such tragic loss of life - it must have been truly horrifying for those kids. People should never let kids play around stuff like this unsupervised.
