Of course you can leave children unattended. It's an integral part of growing up. You just have to figure out a balance between hovering over them and letting them take those risks that are essential to their development.

Probably an older type. The ones where you have to pull on the handle to unlatch the door.

You can't ensure your child's safety at all times without seriously undermining their growth. You can mitigate risk and teach them to do so, but they have to take risks, even dangerous ones to develop properly. I can't even imagine what my childhood would have been like if my parents had foolishly tried to ensure our safety at all times.

I used to catch on all sorts of k@k when I was their age. Our parents left us unsupervised within the confines of the area where I stayed.

However, there also wasn't dangers to our health like this. Would you let your 5 year old play next to a pool? No. Would you let them play in what was pretty much a scrapyard, where there will be sharp rusty bits of metal? No. Or where they might get trapped inside a freezer box that you knew was out there?

I don't believe in mollycoddling kids but you do have to take responsibility and not just let them wander off, they lack the capacity for intelligent thought at that age.

They also seal and are sound proof.

This is a nightmare story. Was one of the things I was terrified of as a kid after I saw it happen on TV

Rescue 911 (iirc) was a good program for kids (even though the content might not have been). You became very aware of the dangers of the world from that program.

This story is absolutely sad though,to loose one kid like that would be bad enough,but five at once!:cry:

Yep same here.I'm surprised I'm alive still,when we were small we got up to all kinds of crap,I grew up close to JHB but in a semi rural area and we used to catch scorpions,venomous snakes,play on the road daily for hours and go exploring in the farms with dams,vicious dogs etc.

The funny thing is I want to be more protective with my children and try to stop them from wandering of on their own but then I realize how will they ever learn about the world if you just keep them indoors safely all the time.A balance needs to be struck and as they get older they need to be allowed to go out exploring a bit.

I'm definitely going to pay more attention to old freezers/fridges or anything that can trap kids from now on though!:wtf:

That theme music gave the big creeps as a kid, I'd change channel when it started and only came back when the theme music was done..

I've saved his skin several times so it's a tie!

Edit: When he was 8 he climbed this huge tree in the back of our yard and nobody knew this tree had a hollow trunk from the top. He fell inside about 2 meters down and buried in loads of moss and leaves. We called the police, neighbors, everyone to help find him. It was I who heard his muffled screams from deep inside this tree Haha!!

Poor thing was sobbing like a little girl when the fireman reached down and hauled him out. He's never lived that one down :D :p

i remember 30 years ago that there was safety warnings and adverts about kids playing around freezers and fridges for this exact reason.
