Five ways to cut telecoms costs

Would, could, should, will never happen as long as we have people who actually have no clue what they're doing running things

Sounds simple enough! Not gonna happen with this government thought. They're too busy fighting about who's really in charge. Anyway, let me not go down that road.....

can agree with 2 - 5 but

1. Fund Sentech

Government has (or should that be had?) serious plans for Sentech. The goal is for Sentech to provide and operate a wireless broadband network. It needs over R4bn to accomplish this, and to date has only received R500m. Whether or not R4bn is enough to roll out infrastructure to link rural communities, public facilities (schools, clinic, courts) and other government offices remains to be seen.

Thankfully at the end of last month, the Presidency got involved, in an attempt to unblock funding for Sentech and gave it R5bn. Why not also sell a minority stake in the Sentech subsidiary which will be operating the broadband network? Surely the private sector would jump at the chance to get involved and actually build a credible competitor?

sentech must distribute signals. full stop. anything further is an absolute waste of money. R500 million to connect 233 schools and surrounds on a WiMax network????????

...and the biggest way to cut Telecoms? Get rid of the fat, lazy, greedy leeches at the top levels of government, and make them pay back all the bribes, skimming, gouging and ill-gotten gains that they have sucked off the backs of the very people who elected them to power.

"don't we already have enough operators?"

meh.

Why didn't they propose the goverment add resolutions to stop telkom from aquiring shares in its competition as well?

goverment won't let it happen. They could have made cheap bandwith provision years ago... but it's easier to rape the paying customer....

Eish! You know!.... Who writes this stuff??? Like Hello!!! We know this already.

I've lost count how many times these type of articles have been published. Best part is the source is Moneyweb. We know all this already. Why not write an article on the lack of leadership in this country. The lack of forward thinking policies...???

By the time bandwidth becomes affordable in SA it will be free Overseas...

Icasa's staff costs (the bulk of its expenditure) for 2007 were around R94m for 300 employees.

Eh?

That is how much per person more or less ? Per month Perannum ect . Asuming my maths is correct that is about 26k per person per month . How can they possibly justify a salary like that for doing nothing ?

FFS!!

yeah - i'm with you on this one.

sentech have absolutely shown they are incapable of any end user type applications

funding them would be like buying whisky and pouring it directly onto the wall with out first filtering it through your kidneys

the land of milk and honey is drying up, not that the gov cares, unless you a bee person.

Despite guavamunts claims about lowering the cost of telecommunications, it's really not a high priority for them.
With the amount of crime, lack of housing, food prices, fuel prices, etc, they know the relatively small amount of people who are complaining at the price of telecoms aren't the ones voting for them or the masses keeping them in power, so why do anything about it?
