So the Windows 10 invitation showed up on my laptop fine, but didn't show up on my wife's despite me having updated it completely.

A quick search turned up this page: http://www.ghacks.net/2015/06/08/how-to-display-the-windows-10-upgrade-icon-if-it-is-not-visible/

I was pretty hesitant about running a .bat file as an administrator that I'd downloaded from an unknown source, but all the comments were universally positive and I was desperate. Famous last words, right?

Regardless, it worked exactly as advertised. The first option confirmed that all the necessary updates were installed successfully, and the second option updated the registry and voila ... the missing logo immediately appeared and I could run through the usual invitation process.

Thought this might help somebody else who's struggling with the same issue?

PS: Opening that .bat in a text editor now, it appears that the two bits of code that updated the registry and fixed the issue for me were these:

reg add "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\UpgradeExperienceIndicators" /v UpgEx /t REG_SZ
%SystemRoot%\System32\GWX\GWX.exe /taskLaunch

Does that mean anything to anybody? Dunno why Windows didn't do that itself.

Will try this later.

Thanks.

Microsoft list the following as reasons why you might not see the Get Windows 10 app on your PC.
  • Your device isn’t up-to-date with at least Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8.1 Update.
  • Windows Update is turned off or is not set to receive updates automatically.
  • You’ve blocked or uninstalled the necessary Windows Update functionality.
  • Your device is not running genuine Windows.
  • Your computer is part of a Windows Domain
  • Microsoft has not determined your device capable of running Windows 10 even though it meets the minimum system requirements.
  • You are running a volume license client: Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Enterprise, Windows 8.1 Pro, Windows 8.1 Enterprise (only retail store bought or preinstalled OEM licenses) get the upgrade offer.

The confusing thing for me LaraC is why would Microsoft not make it a bit more user-friendly? They could just as easily have a free diagnostic tool of their own which will check all of the above for you and give you the results, without leaving users to self-diagnose the issue and feeling like they're missing out.

That simple BAT file which should fix the issue for you can be downloaded here:
Update: If you receive a 500 error on Dropbox, use the following local download link instead: win10fix_full.zip (7752 downloads)

Thank you but both my computers already display the Windows 10 App.

0.o Not my question, but thanks for confirming.
Oops, maybe they wanted to keep the number of people who requested the free upgrade to a minimum?
If I didn’t read about it on the forum I wouldn’t have known had the App not appear on the taskbar.
