flickering LCD

Plasma, no brainer.

42" for R4,999.

You won't get any burn-in and power consumption is hardly that much more than LCD.

Hell, I don't even get image retention on my 42" plasma.

Then I'd go for plasma, the Samsung ps450 will be your best bang for buck :)

Unless you absolutely NEED full HD

is this the model that PP is saying above?

I have the PS42C450.

The PS42C430 is the one around R4,999.

Differences are that the PS42/50C450 has:

Better anti-reflective coating
Extra HDMI port
FM tuner capability
USB media player that plays .mkv's among others (no need for HD media player, although I'd still recommend you get one as they will play anything you throw at it)
Better menu system
Better remote
Touch of Colour Rose Black design (chicks dig it)

They're about 7 - 10% more than the PS42/50C430. Still great TV's though.

I agree.

50" C450 goes for around R7,999. Best value TV on the market.

50" C430 around R7,500.

now that i have someone seconding me i think it is a waste to go smaller and we just mount it up on a wall mount bracket

50" is a bit much for my needs I feel.

It's generally accepted that for 3m viewing distance, 50" is ideal.

That said, I use my 42" at 3m distance and still find it pretty big. :)

Go with what your pocket allows for... And make sure you won't regret not going bigger. ;)

When I bought my 40", it felt HUGE.

Now it feels tiny and I wish I had a 50inch!

Go for 50 if you can Dex!

R7999 is a bit rough for a TV  granted that good use will be put to it, I think I need to compare apples and go have a look on Saturday.

I always found my 32" to be plenty adequate.

Then check this out: R4699

The 42ps450 is a bit more.

That may be so, except when you compare to a 46" entry LCD that costs over R10,000...

I strongly suggest reading the last few pages of this thread - tons of info about comparing LCD and plasma especially when you are in store. http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/306685-General-Plasma-amp-LCD-discussions/page15

how much more? not the one around R4999? if a negligible difference for better specs and features then worth it.

Not a lot more. Go to Hifi Curroption, Game, Dion Wired etc this weekend and have a look. I'm pretty sure that I saw it on special last week in one of the publications for R5k...

Also, maybe give fotocats a call, and see if they stock it, as they only have the 430 on their website.

Edit: Saw PP's post, I am probably mistaken about seeing it so cheap ;)
