Can anyone tell my why SAA's flight taxes are so high? I'm wanting to book 3 tickets for my parents and brother to come visit at the end of August for three days.
Airfare: R2,940.00
Taxes: R2,391.00
TOTAL: R5,331.00

I check on Kulula or some such, and the taxes are 64/pp?

Anyone know of any decent deals on flights atm?

Yep - my taxes from EL->JHB return cost MORE than the ticket.

i been searching online for tickets to the states and with SAA prices i thought i was buying my very own plane to fly myself there.

I found changing departures days saved me a lot. Booked tickets to the UK, leaving on a weekend was +-R2000 more than on a wednesday

Still don't get why Kulula can charge R65/pp - and SAA charge almost R500/pp... surely taxes should be the same for the same flight?

yeah noticed that too from what i could make out, certain flights were leaving on certain days and it was cheaper in the weak or something but there is also the thing about the tourist season but i have no idea when that starts or ends.

maybe someone can tell me why if i fly delta airlines i pay R22k for two people to america but if i fly saa i pay R60k or there abouts.

NOOOIT! Considering Delta are probably subcontracting, that's daft (Delta are a domestic US carrier afaik)...

yeah i was searching over the weekend and a bit in the week and saa are mad with the prices i thought it was a private jet i asked for. i am not sure how the delta flights work but for my quote they use delta airlines but i think you actually use other flights in between, ie klm or lufthansa or something.

SAA are one of the few remaining airlines which don't upfront quote you prices including all airport taxes (Kulula gave in to pressure a few months back).

Not sure where you are flying to in America, but Delta flies directly from Joburg to Atlanta. Agree though, that the SAA prices seem way out of line.

Because Delta services to South Africa suck
The service standard is not nearly as high as SAA - especially in business class- not by a New York mile.
And SAA have a monopoly
