If you have a weak immune system it's a very good reason NOT to get the shot because that's more than likely why some people get sick.

If you are healthy you get the shot to stay healthy.

As I recall they very specifically state you shouldn't receive the shot if you feel even remotely sick at the time of getting it.

For people with living with HIV getting the shot is highly recommended.

While it is difficult for most people to prevent the flu, it is possible to reduce the risk of serious flu complications. That's why the CDC recommends that high-risk groups -- those with chronic conditions such as patients with HIV/AIDS -- should receive the influenza vaccine with a flu shot. Being vaccinated against influenza is especially important when the person with HIV/AIDS is around others, such as at home, in the workplace, or in social settings, who might have the flu.

That's neat .... Generally stopped being sick by becoming a germophobe. Works well

I'm not a germophobe at all, sure I wash my hands when I've been to the loo or before I work with food or eat but other than that I really couldn't care less about germs.

I got the shot + a B12 injection last week Friday. The company offers them for free and you get discovery points so why not. I got a lil' bit of a sore throat and runny nose over the weekend but it was cleared up by the Monday. Which to me sounds about right, I mean it's a tiny shot of the flu virus so makes sense you could possibly start to show symptoms before your body can build up the anti bodies for it?

Also had the shot last year and never got the flu. I don't see the harm in getting it, especially if you're working in an office where they end up closing all the windows in favour of the aircon.

Generic biologists don't make vaccines. Ask a vaccinologist or an immunologist. Heck at least ask someone involved in similar fields at a molecular level like a molecular biologist or a biochemist. Appeals to authority only work when the entity you are appealing to is actually an authority.

Biologists don't even have to take physiology.

As an aside, as a biochemist I agree that the flu vaccine seems to me to be largely a waste of time but I also acknowledge readily that I'm neither an immunolgist nor am I a vaccinologist so my opinion on the matter counts for little.

Epidemiologist may have something useful to say too...

Can someone confirm whether the following is true? That a doctor will not give you a flu vaccination while you have flu-like symptoms.

I can't see why he wouldn't give it to you. He might advise against it because if your flu-like symptoms was caused by the flu, then getting a flu vaccination isn't going to help you at all I imagine?

Of course.... The syndicate-pharmacy-mafia approves.

You have a bad experience or something? :p

My question about the vaccine is whether record is kept of what vaccine you are given. Let's assume each vaccine has a code, like 123ABC - it would be pointless to be given the same 123ABC vaccine year on year as you are already immune to the viral strands it contains, effectively you'd be paying R60-R90 for nothing. You need to get vaccine 144ADD, for example, the year after, containing different viral strains to become immune to those additionally.

I have asked the nurse giving the jabs this year about that and got a frown in response.

Why do I need a flu vaccine every year?
A flu vaccine is needed every season for two reasons. First, the body’s immune response from vaccination declines over time, so an annual vaccine is needed for optimal protection. Second, because flu viruses are constantly changing, the formulation of the flu vaccine is reviewed each year and sometimes updated to keep up with changing flu viruses. For the best protection, everyone 6 months and older should get vaccinated annually.

Efficacy diminishes over time.

Alrighty...
Got a flu shot last month. 48 hours later felt a bit sickly... took some sinus tablets, problem gone.
I haven't been sick since. I have been in close proximity to:
1) A child that had a very bad cold
2) Several co-workers, one of whom was off work due to the flu or something quite like it.

I will tell you what has happened though, a bad-ass dental abscess that necessitated emergency dental surgery on Saturday night. I was subsequently informed never to drink Coke ever again. Have to go back for the implant though. Not too sure if I am up for the pain and discomfort again.
