Hi all,

I've applied for a position at FNB on their COBOL Learnership program. I'd like to know what it's all about, in particular what systems/programs are coded using COBOL at FNB. Is it used to handle credit card or inter-account transactions? Does it involve calculation of interest rates and the like? Something to do with insurance perhaps? What exactly do they use it for? Any input is appreciated. The more info the better.

How do you apply for something that you have no idea about?

I suspect its for working on their mainframe banking system Hogan.

I doubt anyone will give you this information as it could be considered sensitive. I know I sure as hell wouldn't speak about systems at any of my clients,COBOL and otherwise

Any reason you want know if its for insurance or credit cards or inter account transfers etc?

You will still probably learn core skills for COBOL programming, which wouldnt matter the type of system?

Given the turnover rate of staff between the banks, this type of stuff is not top secret stuff. All the banks pretty much know how the other guys are running their businesses.

True, but you're still not supposed to throw that sort of information on to a public forum.

Personal preference, that's all.

AFAIK. Used primarily for insurance risk profile calculations and back-end management of profiles, it does all the heavy-lifting in the backend, so in FNB's case, most likely handles the queues (for transactions) and data capture/retrieval. It's rather antiquated but a lot of the old established firms use it in their mainframe systems.

I see, thanks.
