FNB launches QR code payments for its banking app

FNB announced it is adding support for QR code payments within its mobile banking app.

The bank said this move makes it the first financial institution in South Africa to integrate QR code payments for both consumers and sole proprietor businesses on a banking app.

I use this now. My only complaint is that the FNB app takes a bit longer to open than Zapper.

The other downside is you don't get the zapper loyalty card/voucher discount stuff.

This is the reason that some Chinese phone makers (like Xiaomi) don't have NFC in their phones, as the Chinese uses QR-codes instead. Apparently it's very popular over there.

Makes sense, saves a bit on costs as well, also I honestly think I've used it twice.

NFC or QR? Had NFC on my Samsung S4, don't think I ever got around in using it, in the 3 years I had it.

The Capitec app one is quite fast or if you don't like the logo use one from another bank.

Or you can add the Scan to Pay widget to one of your home screens, which takes you directly to the camera, without having to navigate through the app...

NFC or QR? Had NFC on my Samsung S4, don't think I ever got around in using it, in the 3 years I had it.

I also had an S4 and among the reasons I got it was because I thought NFC would be the next big thing. I messed around it with apps, but I've never used it in the real world.

My next two phones (including my current one) doesn't have NFC

Neither, they have their own parallel system from the sounds of the article. Your business would have to support yet another way to pay.

It's still amusing to see foreigners sometimes amazed that we're paying with our phones and it's so common, like they've never seen it before.

This works with Zapper, Snapscan and Masterpass. Some QR codes require some additional information that the FNB app does not support yet.

I don't think it has that functionality.

FNB app already has the facility to send bank details in an SMS / whatsapp / email / whatever your preferred sharing method.

They would still need to copy/paste the numbers into the appropriate fields to create a new beneficiary though.

Definitely needed. Also the ability to auto-populate the reference field too. This way an online store can have a QR code on checkout that auto-populates all the fields required to make payment via EFT.
