FNB ordered to withdraw its Steve advertisements

Thanhk goodness! It was an annoying and stupid ad campaign from the start.

Wasn't a big fan either...but annoying isn't a reason for censure. Bullying? Please. Offended?

Annoying wasn't the reason for the censure. It was one of the words I chose.
See the article for the real reason for the censure.

19 out of 20 complaints probably unhappy Steves. Harmful for children? I'm saying bull****.

If I was a Steve I would also have complained.
It was insulting and poorly thought through.
Any Ad campaign which alienates a portion of your customer base is just stupid and bad PR.
And yes... it was annoying. Thank goodness for mute buttons.

You were obviously never the victim of a sustained bullying campaign at school

Hey Nigel, where did you get those tiles?

Must have destroyed many a childhood by this logic...

Not quite the same as having your name used as a label for stupidity

The whole point of those Carlo Tito Mario ads was to portray old Nige as a moron who should have shopped at CTM instead. At the time the ads were heralded and loved. If anything this is merely a distinction of severity and not one of principle, however the ruling sets a precedent on principle.

I find the ads incredibly annoying and almost always immediately switch stations when it airs. But the principle that kids with the same name may find themselves bullied as a result is stupid. Bullies will always find reasons to bully others. Trying to protect kids by removing the excuses bullies use is pointless...

Not the same. He wasn't stupid because he was nigel. And he wasn't called nigel because he was stupid.

Kids back in the day called stupid people Nigels. It happened. The very same issue was debated back then for the very same reasons on East Coast Radio, as an example. I know because I was a kid who was a guest on the show who was asked if I insult other kids by calling them Nigels. My uncle was the host. It was a thing back then. Kids also bullied others for not wearing Doc Martins or having the wrong brand of surf board. These are all excuses bullies use. They're not the reasons...

Kids often have fragile egos and want to feel part of the group. It is unacceptable that a poor child should have to arrive at school innocently one day and be taunted (and therefore excluded) for no other reason then their name happens to be Steve.

FNB has better ways to make money than to pick on innocent kids.

I found FNB's letter was lame and it failed to appreciate the issue - actually I hadn't taken a position on this until I ready that letter.

Who is named Steve? Steve is usually short for Steven or Stephen. So mister condescending man to Eugene, where's your salt?
