FNB refreshes iPad mini deal

Condition being you have to open a personal cheque account by April?
 
I'm still not convinced the iPad mini is the one to get ahead of the 9.7' iPad Retina especially if you have a touch screen phone already

It's a hard choice indeed. I'm looking at getting MrsC a Mini (seeing that it's unquestionably better than her ipad2) and I'll see if it's a better option for me as well. There's also the cost to factor in though. On paper the retina 4 is much higher specced but the end experience actually weighs in favour of the Mini because of the form factor.

True, I was reading somewhere that they plan on restricting themselves from releasing mini with retina as it could kill full on iPad(while market allows restriction). Again I think what sways it is your current device and what your purpose for it will be.. i.e. for me since i have a phone it's just visual media(video or ebook or visually working with things) consumer on the go so a bigger screen is more of an advantage yet portability is not as much as i use phone for all coms,

For someone who doesn't have phone they use for everything, a big screen is a negative as you want a phablet like device(cross between the two albeit no voice calls). So e.g. iPad mini works well if u use it for hud gps navigation and a primary data coms and media consumer albeit smaller screen.. but portability afforded due to size is the winner.
 
I think the reason they haven't actually released a retina Mini is Moore's Law - the amount of reengineering that had to be done to the iPad3 to run a 2048 screen without crippling slowdown and killing the battery was quite enormous and even then the 3rd gen model heats up pretty badly and has worse battery life. To still then shrink that down to 7.8' size is going to require another couple of generations. That will be something to behold though when it does hit - a 324 PPI iPad.

According my my missus it is… and if I could get her to give my mini back I'd probably agree with her. :o

I thought "retina" was the term used when you can no longer distinguish pixels, if so what's the point?

Retina is glossy Applespeak but yeah that's what it boils down to. But the ppi of the iPhone4+ is 326, and the PPI of the iPad3+ is 264, so there's a pretty big gap there even if they're calling it retina. I might be fooling myself but I think I can detect pixels on the iPad3 though. I guess it doesn't really matter, except that phones are now getting to 400ppi levels with the crop of 1080p displays on the market, which strikes me as seriously overkilled.

But the best guess if Apple decides to release a 'giant' sized iPhone to fit in with the 4.7'+ phones on the market is that they will just stick with the same iPhone5 resolution and stretch it to iPad4 PPI levels - so I kind of think Apple doesn't see increasing PPI as an incredibly important end goal.
