Fog Lamps.....

I'm not all that convinced that it's a battle worth fighting for; I'd MUCH rather we got wrongful rear-fogs usage sorted.

Like someone mentioned earlier in this thread I think you will find that the individuals who ride with their rear fogs on really have no clue it's a nasty side effect for having the (cool) front fogs on their Mini Cooper (my personal pet hate) switched on. This also goes a ways to explaining the perplexed and annoyed hand waving in the review mirror when you attempt to remove the paint from their boot with your high beams.....

Wow big thread, not gonna read it all.

When I got my first car after having just passed my drivers I was unaware of the fog lights in front. After having only discovered them when playing with the big button on the dash I realized that it did indeed help me to see potholes in the road a lot easier at night as it lit up the road a bit more underneath the headlight beams. I was still unaware that it bugged anyone as I have never had any problems with these lights from oncoming traffic and until this thread here did not even realize rear fog lights existed LOL!

Shows how observant I am  I don't think my car has rear fog lights, I only have one button for the fog lights anyway.

Anyway must have been at least a year or two back when someone on this forum started a thread complaining of fog lights. Since then I have never turned mine on again. But still have never once been blinded by it or even bothered by it :/ so I am somewhat confused but just keeping the peace by being considerate :)

To me with them on they do make cars look slightly more modern at night for some reason.

May I ask about the pot holes and using your fogs to see them, what speed were you travelling at in order to see and evade them?

Hmmmm.... I would say anything between 40-80kmph and say when on dodgy side roads like Die Ou Pad or what have you. Would be far more difficult to dodge one on a highway at higher speed but being an avid gamer my reactions are pretty sharp for the slower roads :p hehe.

It's been such a long time since I have used them but if memory serves they do slightly illuminate the immediate road a good few meters ahead because my headlights shine over that area making a dark road just in front of me seem even darker like a shadow and taking more strain to see. Makes the difference between just thinking something is there from a distance rather than seeing it approaching more clearly even through that shadowy area just in front of the car.

i guess he must be going pretty slow, because if you haven't see the pothole with your normal driving lights doing 80km/h, i doubt that his fog lights must've helped seeing them now

LOL, Andy it sounds as if you prefer to hit the pot holes in the dark and wait to inspect the damage in the morning!

Coz remember I would imagine even with your normal lights a pothole would be difficult to see at a distance on a road that is only illuminated by your car lights and nothing else. Only until you get close can you see it is actually a hole as normal 3D line of sight would have it I suppose right?

Ja Ja, come back when you've completed your Physics lesson, specifically the one about time, distance and velocity. :p

Perhaps we all have it wrong and they really aren't fog lights. I guess it's a typo that slipped it many years ago and now it has become a legacy type thing.

Originally it was VAG lights and they were meant to be used by everyone that drives a VAG or associates with being a classless, tasteless driver.
The reason they are so bright and annoying is so that you can spot said drivers from far away and avoid them and their dreary drab cars.

Let me know how you're going to avoid the pothole doing 60km/h when its 5m infront of you (this is when the fog light will actually start to illuminate it), because unless your names Fazda and have the reaction time of Superman you'll never be able to avoid it in time.

Some may think he's Superman but the rest of us have secretly known for a long time that he's actually The Stig :D

Thought I already explained?

It's not gonna make a huge difference but there is a benefit. But don't stress man I don't use them anymore :p

Wow you really hate VAG.

Yes you did, I read it and then got distracted by Fazda irrational justifications for using them again! lol :) At least you've freed yourself from the shackles of abusive fog light usage. Your fellow motorist is a happier motorist.

Wait I drive a VAG and I don't even have fog lights on my car, main reason is I don't really need them, I had my Astra for 6 years and I think I turned the fog lights on once and that was to see if they actually worked.

Agree, I did the same thing, they don't work, and even less so if you've got Bi-xenons, which are the best headlights I've ever had.

Then you are the 4th VAG driver I respect (after my grandma, uncle and best friend whom collects VAGs).
Keep them off until you are in fog.
