Fog Lamps.....

Since I mostly drive during daytime I never even noticed that people were leaving their fog lights on until this thread... and now that I've noticed it, it irritates me a lot!

Thanks for that. :P

Glad to be of service...:D

I have noticed douche bags driving with their brights on in daylight of late... I don't know who the fark thought it was a good idea to do this??

Perhaps people think it will help with other road users being able to see their car... I don't know about you, but when the sun is shining it's warming rays of joy, I can see the other cars on the road. Hell, if you can't see other cars in broad daylight, that mean you are blind, in which case people should be given medals for driving while blind. So it's clear the justification of turning on your brights is no more intelligent than assuming Julius is a Physicist.

Now, I've also noticed that when people drive with their brights on, it blinds me. Yes, while you driving with your brights on, it actually makes other drivers more susceptible to having accidents. How is it meant to be safe when you basically shining a big bloody torch into the eyes of other road users? Often the beams of light shining on my face from these farks is bright enough to give me a headache, make me close my eyes, or even look away from the road because of my retina suffering from the equivalent of your tongue being dipped in chilly sauce.

So please, I beg of the halfwits on the roads today, please don't use your brights, ever (there's times when you need to use them... but for the sake of the other drivers, I'll say that the brights are a useless feature and should never be used). Honestly, my opinion on the average human is growing duller and duller every day :(

Here is a good example of fogtards in action :
FogTards.jpg

The Tucson is really just trying to showoff since it only has its park lights on in order to switch on the foglights. The Getz that is turning left was the same. The Peugeot, Nissan and Cruiser really have no reason to have their foglights on as their head lights are already doing a good job of making them visible. The only car with sense here is the M-class, although I am pretty sure it forgot to use its indicator.

Wow, they come in hordes (the morons). I turn on my lights when it's too dark, or it's raining... I only ever use my fog lights when it's raining like mad or there's actually fog (which happens a couple times a year where I live).

We need a new thread, "how many moving violations can you get into one picture?"!

hahaha...that would make a great thread filled to the brim with photos - as i am sure anyone who spends more than 5min in traffic, will be able to take numerous photos

As dangerous as it may be, I do exactly the same to those with fog lights on. Secretly I am probably hoping they lose control, swerve off the road and we have one less idiot in the world. Rather that than some innocent person losing control as a result of being blinded by said idiot.

and then both of you can't see....

no point in brighting them if they're not dimming their lights after a quick flash

I've got no problem with normal front fog lights, either at dawn/dusk or at night - they do give you better lighting to the side and they're a non-issue for other road users. However, people driving with the rear fog lights on on anything but fog and torrential rain, should be shot on sight.

From a subjective observation based purely on the appearance of these people, I would hazard that switches confuse them.

LEAD SA campaign asks everyone to drive with their headlights on
i think front fog lights are fine as they are not very bright and dont hinder anyones vision of the road

When the sun is behind you at an angle, having your headlights on makes you more visible for oncoming traffic. The sun is already in their eyes-pupils constricted etc.

Whats with people saying that fogtards are "showing off" how is having a fog light showing off? Seriously, dont be an idiot. If people do this its because

1. they dont know any better
2. they think it improves visibility

my guess 80% or more nr 1. Never underestimate the power of stupid

There was another fog light thread at some stage and a guy did claim he does it because it makes his car look cooler.

LMFAO...I did change all my lights 2 weeks ago on my GTi to al LED and xenon inside and out, it indeed looks COOLER!

BUT, I only switch the fogs on so after 6ish and then the driving lights when its dark obvias...but after having asked around, its mainly done as people believe it makes the car look cooler, which in some cases, like mine, lol, it does make my car look cooler, but its like people having lunch at 1pm inside a restaurant with black shades on that are as ig as their faces...it F'ing irks me out...I think its the same with the fogs and the DRL's...its dytime, we can see your ass!

Here is a discussion for you to read enigma :

http://www.fordstownerssa.co.za/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=5180&hilit=foglights

The fog lamps' job is to show you the edges of the road, the lane markings, and the immediate foreground. When used in combination with the headlamps, good fog lamps weight the overall beam pattern towards the foreground so that even though there may be a relatively high level of upward stray light from the headlamps causing glare back from the fog or falling snow, there will be more foreground light than usual without a corresponding increase in upward stray light, giving back some of the vision you lose to precipitation.

When used without headlamps in conditions of extremely poor visibility due to snow, fog or smoke, good fog lamps light the foreground and the road edges only, so you can see your way safely at reduced speeds.

In clear conditions, more foreground light is not a good thing, it's a bad thing. Some foreground light is necessary so you can use your peripheral vision to see where you are relative to the road edges, the lane markings and that pothole 10 feet in front of your left wheels. But foreground light is far less safety-critical than light cast well down the road into the distance, because at any significant speed (much above 30 mph), what's in the foreground is too close for you to do much about. If you increase the foreground light, your pupils react to the bright, wide pool of light by constricting, which in turn substantially reduces your distance vision—especially since there's no increase in down-the-road distance light to go along with the increased foreground light. It's insidious, because high levels of foreground light give the illusion, the subjective impression, of comfort and security and "good lighting".

There are even pretty pictures for you to look at if you click on the link.

The only conclusion one can really reach is that people who use their fog lights in clear conditions are indeed idiots!

I agree that the act is truly a lack of good judgment. By doing this not only is the person endangering people from the incoming traffic but also himself and his passengers.

...are they really necessary for local use?

I've just returned from a walkabout of huge proportions of long distance and town driving. Not one kilometre of mist was encountered, yet so many cars had their fog lamps on. My car has fogs and I really don't see any benefit in using them. They don't add any extra illumination benefit on a clear night. I'll go so far as to say: That when mist is encountered they help very little when the speed is more than 80km/h.

In fact the law prohibits their use in the absence of mist.

So what is the point of this post? The danger of fogs on 4x4 vehicles. They are high off the ground and can present a blinding glare to oncoming traffic. Rear fogs are even more annoying, especially when there is a slight drizzle.

What justification exists to drive with fogs on?

Front Fogs aren't an issue for me, it's the rear fogs that kill me. Sometimes I wish I had an air rifle and shoot out the fog lights on the car in front of me if they're on.
