Hi

I had the MWEB 2mb uncapped package for 6 months to get the free router. As far as I know, I haven't breached any T&C.
My 6 months are over and I've given my 1 month notice of cancellation.
Being cancelled tomorrow.
I'm planning to switch to Afrihost. Will the FON router work with Afrihost?
Not sure what I would need to change on the router other than the username and password.
I've seen other settings mentioned on Afrihost's site, like Protocol, VPI, VCI, etc...
What about the Time Server Settings?

Help??

Yes, it will work.

Just set it up like a normal router, but make sure under "internet connection" you click disconnect, as soon as you do that, you will get space to put in Username + Password.
Pop in the Afrihost details here.

All I'll say is be careful with Afrihost right now. Their prices are always good but the quality of the network is questionable and I find their support staff to be clueless! I even have one of them sending me an email admitting that they have problems at the moment and will be working on the network to fix it.

As they say: Buyer Beware!

Thanks for the tip, brentm.

sSslik, I'll register a trial account and try it out before I lock myself into anything.

sure thing - as I said, just tread carefully - things are not well in the land of Afrihost - that's my personal opinion of course

I didn't know about this trick. I loaded the Technicolor TG589 firmware and now use the router with Afrihost.

Haha wonder what Mweb will think of this my understanding was the router stays Mwebs only as long as you gave an account with them ?

Hope you don't mind me hijacking this thread, I also have a FON router that just stopped working. Any recommendations for a replacement? Been using it for 5 months. Not sure if it's worth the bother of doing a warranty claim as there was a massive lightning storm in the middle of the night. Also looking to move away from mweb. My line supports up to 2Mbps. Was looking at the TP-Link W8968 for R579, unless there's something with better value for money.

glad to hear this.

glad to hear this. Is your FON still working ok with Afrihost? I am looking to move away from MWEB myself, and have been delaying for this very reason - as the cost of a new modem/router would reverse any savings on monthly subs...

Currently using MWEB router: TG589vn v3

Just keep in mind MWEB owns the modem, if you cancel with them they reserve the right to send a courier to collect it from you or you can buy it from them for R800. On the other hand you don't need to flash the normal firmware, you can just type in your Afrihost details and it will work.

Thanks for the reply. I've been with MWEB just over a year now, so hoping they won't ask to collect it. I sent them a mail to cancel yesterday - now waiting for confirmation of end-of-service date, so can switch to Axxess.

Any reason I should look to flash the firmware on the FON router TG589vn v3 , or just stick with stock, and update with Axxess username/password when I sign up?
