Forced Medical Aid

Depends on if you're coastal, if you're in Gauteng nope. But that is one way to get her not to take the work one.
Any of the core plans, with the exception of coastal core and classic core is going to cost you 4k a month for or less for two adults and be applicable in Gauteng..

No, I meant if they’re old enough to have adult children, their age will count against them if they join a medical aid now. The late joiner fee will increase their premium. Probably also explains why the premium is R4k for one person.

No need to add the adult children to the policy.

I was just using the kids as a way to approximate the age of OP's wife. In any case it is moot since R13 says there are no late joiner fees for mandatory company medical aids.

What I did when I was in a similar situation when changing jobs, made my wife the main member, got a letter stating we are a member of xxx medical aid where wife is the main member. So join up for the cheapest medical aid. Make you the main member get a letter stating you are and give to HR. the boxes are ticked. cancel afterwards.

If you're on medical aid and she's on your medical aid, then you don't need to use the companies, but I doubt you'll find medical aid for R4000 for 2 of you.
I am on discovery for 4.5k pm for 3 people (2 adults and 1 child). I know there are cheaper medical aids out there.

I'm not sure about that at all. My mother was in a similar situation, she and my dad were never on medical aid when they ran a sole prop. They closed the sole prop, old man retired and she went to work for a while at Deloites and had to join. They were charged the highest possible late fees and she still carries that on now even years later being retired herself. Look they never complained because they were rightly charged due to never being on a medical aid but thats why I question the no fees if company.

Hi. I need some help and advise - I have a question which I'm struggling to find the answer to on the internet. My wife has been working for one of the big banks for years now and it's compulsory for them to have medical aid - it's an employment requirement. For years we've been ducking and diving this as we have 2 young adult daughters, studying and my income hasn't been always favorable & consistent. Recently HR contacted my wife to join the medical aid - on the cheapest package, her contribution is R4000!!!...for her alone, not including myself or the kids. We honestly cannot afford this - R4000 of our disposable income is gone. My question is, WHY do employers force their employees to have medical aid? How do they benefit? There's certain basic things that we just can't do anymore and future plans to do certain this for our daughters are now merely a dream. We are also in desperate need of a replacement car - we can no longer afford to buy and won't qualify in anyway as our disposalble income is now too low. Any advise will be appreciated.

Employees on medical aid are more likely to go to the doctor if they are sick, getting well sooner and taking fewer sick days. They will also take care of issues sooner, thereby not getting THAT sick when they get sick.

Additionally, they can negotiate cheaper rates if a by having all employees belonging to the same medical aid.

That late joiner only applies when you join non-employer medical aid. But yes they are going to have to part with at least 3k. And the op must also note that not joining the medical doesn't give his family 4k in the pocket. His wife will just pay more tax.
Very good point about the tax benefits, that will go a good way to nullify the cost of the Medical aid.

OP, do you not already have medical aid for your children? Hospital plans?

It's a risk management exercise from the company's perspective. If your wife manages to fall ill, they want her back up and running ASAP.

Sounds like the OP has no existing medical aid?
That's playing with fire, even the most basic medical aid hospital plan is better than nothing.

Medical aid is the the most basic form of life insurance, it's more important than just about anything else you may spend your money on
Not in a socialist country - in this case South Africa - that provides free healthcare!

Maybe these can provide you with some loopholes ...
