Ford Bantam (Groupie Thread)

Fcking prick with a golf spinned past me and shot up a stone onto my passenger window. It exploded. Glass everywhere.
R600 for a new window - not bad.

The good, bad and mostly ugly of SA’s special edition bakkie names

Ford Bantam Montana

Introduced in 2008 to celebrate the Bantam’s 25th anniversary in SA, its Montana treatment applied was shared with its special edition Ranger sibling. This was before the days of all-black accessorising, and all of its muscle-making bits were still finished in stainless steel. We suspect, though, that the state of Montana that it’s named after is somewhat tougher than what the Fiesta-based Bantam could ever muster.

What could be tougher, looks like a stock standard Bantam to me.

I picked up a 2007 1.3 with 196k on the clock for R30,000. Voetstoots. A bit of a gamble.

So far, I have had to MacGyver the tail hatch with a tie up because the one rod had lost the plastic clippy, so you couldn't open it. Works now.

Other immediate issue is the driver's side interior door latch doesn't work, so you have to open the door from the outside. From what I've read online, door locks seem to be a common issue with the Bantam.

I have noticed it leaks a bit of oil. I am going to take it to my mechanic and ask him to give it a once over and full service. I just hope nothing major is on its way out because so far it drives okay.

EDIT: Barring it isn't a dud (it was being used as a company run around), the price was extremely good, and I had the spare cash. I am going to give it a bit of TLC and then either sell it to my partner's father (he's a handyman and does work on weekends to supplement income) or combine it with my own car and trade-in/sell both for a new car for myself. As long as I don't have to put too much money into it, I should be able to make a couple of bucks on it going by the prices I see Bantams of similar year and mileage going for. Or I'll just hang on to it as a bakkie always comes in handy.

we had a Bantam as a company car once, drove okay, if a bit under-powered
this is coming from a Tazz 1300,

part we really didnt like was the mechanicals where the alternator bracket is weak, and simply broke apart,
almost overheating the engine, having owned this bakkie from new. and for something like this to happen, has us sworn off anything that isnt Asian built,

pricing reflects that, look how much a Bumtum costs VS a equivalent Toyota (even an old one)

It definitely doesn't feel like it will win any races performance wise, so I can see it struggling with a load, but I don't really plan on using it to do heavy lifting if I keep it. Weekly run to the rubbish dump/big shop at Makro kind of thing.

Price wise, the cheapest one I can find on Autotrader is a 2008 for R52,900. Looking at Autotrader, ones in good condition hold their value. There is a 2003 1.3 with 237k on the clock going for R80,000.
