In today’s episode of things you didn’t expect to read in 2022, Ford has built a one-off, Pope-themed Ford Bronco. Because of course it has.

The Wimbledon White creation you see above pays homage to the specially modified open-air Bronco that was used by Pope John Paul II on his visit to the United States in 1979 – a car that now belongs to the United States Secret Service.

There is rhyme and reason to the modern-day replica, though. Its full name is the Ford Bronco Pope Francis Center First Edition and the plan is for it to be auctioned off at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale sale later this week. The funds raised will head to the Pope Francis Center in Detroit to support its fight to end homelessness.

The Bronco Raptor suffers no tailpipe envy, opting instead for a functional, simple design

The Ford Bronco Raptor is finally here because Ford figures that combining the horsey and dinosaur nameplates is tantamount to printing money; Ford’s probably right. As you’d expect, the Bronco Raptor is loud, brash and stupidly wide. So wide you’ll want a spotter to help you reverse, in case your dune runs dust over the rear camera lens. But the Bronco Raptor is not as much of a showoff as its fenders would suggest, and I’m grateful that Ford did not stick two or more big, dumb tailpipes on this thing, like those of the F-150 Raptor.

The Bronco Raptor’s tailpipes are notably difficult to spot from a head-on view of its rear end. That’s because the exhaust pipes are turned down and tucked up high, presumably to prevent any damage they might sustain while off-roading.

So not only will the tailpipes make the Bronco Raptor sound good, despite it lacking the V8 of the Bronco DR, but they’ll also come from the factory ready to hit the trail — or not hit the trail, more like — sat up high, where they don’t get in the way of ground clearance or affect the Bronco’s departure angle.

The Ford Bronco Raptor Is Too Damn Big

The 2022 Ford Bronco Raptor has a size problem that makes it harder to produce

Don’t worry, fellas. The Ford Bronco Raptor has a size problem, too. However, its problem is being too big. Ford somehow managed to make a vehicle that is both too tall and too wide for its production facility.

According to Motor Authority, the Braptor’s design brief called for 13 inches of suspension travel at the front and rear, but engineers on the product wanted more. And more they got. The production Bronco Raptor has 14 inches of rear suspension travel. That caused quite the issue for production, as it made the truck just about 78 inches tall.

In fact, the Bronco Raptor is too tall for its assembly line in Wayne, Michigan. But engineers stuck to their guns and told others on the project to figure it out.

And, figure it out they did. They created a two-position shock mount bracket that holds the rear axle an inch higher than normal, preventing the rear suspension from reaching full extension.

After rolling off the assembly line, Bronco Raptors then head to the “Mod Center” next door. That’s where factory accessories are installed. The Bronco Raptors are placed on a lift. There, two bolts per side are loosened, then a set screw is removed from the bottom of the axle bracket and placed in the lower slot of the casting. An engineer on the project said it’s an error-proof way to make sure the axle is in the right spot.

However, height wasn’t the only size issue the Bronco Raptor faced — it’s also far too thicc for their paint production process.

I Decree The Pope-Themed Bronco Shall Henceforth Be Known As The Papa Bronco

You may already know that Ford and the Pope Francis Center just auctioned off a Pope-themed 2021 Bronco and that the proceeds of said auction will go to fight homelessness in Detroit. What you may not know is that in Mexico, where the Pope is essentially a rockstar, we call the supreme pontiff el Papa. And that makes this Ford Bronco First Edition the Papa Bronco, as far as I’m concerned.

The auction closed on Thursday afternoon, so you already missed your only chance to guiltlessly hoon the Papa Bronco off-road, which Ford says is rocking a paint finish tracing back to the original Bronco:

The custom build wears classic Wimbledon White exterior paint, a color featured on the 1966 Bronco but not available on today’s Bronco lineup. Custom wheels with matching Wimbledon White finish by Detroit Steel Wheels feature a Rapid Red stripe at the center to match striping on the bodysides and hood corners. Iconic Silver-painted elements, such as the face of the one-piece grille and the upper portion of the Ford Performance heavy-duty modular front metal bumper, add to the heritage-inspired look.

Ford Bronco Raptor Markups Are Coming, Because Of Course They Are

Some dealers are flat-out saying how much they expect markups to be.

It’s pretty messed up that we have to come to expect things like this, but we all know markups on the Ford Bronco Raptor are coming. The hardcore version of the Bronco hasn’t even rolled down the production line yet, but as Cars Direct reports, dealers are already estimating how much they’re going to overcharge for them. My own little investigation has confirmed the rumor.

The Bronco is still one of the hottest vehicles on the market right now. Markups and ordering problems have been rampant, and it’s going to get even worse with the Bronco Raptor. With its twin-turbo 400 horsepower V6, unique fenders and flares, and desert blasting off-road suspension, none of that comes cheap with its $69,995 base price. To get an idea of just how deep you’ll have to dig into your pockets for one, Cars Direct got in touch with the highest-volume Ford dealership in California, Galpin Ford. A salesperson there estimated the dealership will be selling Bronco Raptors for $25,000 over sticker:

According to a salesperson at Galpin Ford — one of the highest-volume Ford dealers — the 2022 Bronco Raptor will have “at least” a $25,000 markup. While that’s merely an estimate since the dealership hasn’t received their initial allocation figures, it’s worth noting that this is already their current markup on in-stock Broncos.

Tamiya is making an uber-cool R/C Ford Bronco

Been pining after a Bronco EV? Here’s one in miniature form…

Everyone’s favourite radio-controlled car builder Tamiya has unveiled some of its new products for 2022, and we are obsessed with this brilliant recreation of the Ford Bronco. You can't handle the cuteness.

Tamiya says that this will be an assembly kit for people to build at home, and that the end result will use an electric motor and four-wheel drive. Yep, it’s technically a Bronco EV.

The plastic model is almost 50cm long and comes with some fantastic details like that mega roof rack, the 12-spoke wheels and a Bronco-branded spare wheel cover.

That’s not all for Tamiya’s 2022 catalogue though, of course. Check out the six-wheeled Tyrrell P34 F1 car, the Mercedes C11 endurance racer and the Jägermeister-liveried 1973 Alpine A110 below. We’ll have a tough time picking our next project that’s for sure.

Ford Bronco becomes available in UK from specialist dealer

New Jeep Wrangler rival starts at £45,000 from Clive Sutton, which provides a two-year, 30,000-mile warranty

The new Ford Bronco has arrived in the UK through specialist Clive Sutton, and the retailer’s order books are already full until 2023.

The new SUV is imported from the US by the dealer, which specialises in desirable, unique and powerful vehicles.

Prices start at £45,000 and rise up to £85,000. In the US, the car starts from $29,995 (£23,700).

The Jeep Wrangler rival is driven by either a 2.3-litre Ecoboost turbo petrol engine producing 266bhp and 310lb ft or a larger 2.7-litre Ecoboost turbo petrol offering 306bhp and 400lb ft.

A seven-speed manual gearbox with an integrated crawl gear is standard and a 10-speed automatic optional.

Clive Sutton has said that it will provide a comprehensive two-year, 30,000-mile warranty in place of Ford’s standard warranty offering, which doesn't apply in the UK.

“As soon as Ford announced the new Bronco 4x4 SUV, we had enquiries from customers far and wide,” said company founder and CEO Clive Sutton.

UK Importer Is Bringing The Ford Bronco To Buyers Across The Pond

Prepare to pay prices equal to some luxury off-road offerings, however.

The Ford Bronco has always been a North American-only vehicle. With how popular the new Bronco has proven to be, I wouldn’t be surprised if buyers in other markets are hoping to get their hands on one. Luckily, one UK importer will be offering the new Broncos for sale, with a warranty, as Autocar reports.

Although Ford has said before that the Bronco was only going to be a North American-specific product, UK importer Clive Sutton thinks there may be a Euro Bronco market. The London-based importer was previously known for tuning Mustangs for the UK drivers’ market — their Mustang CS850GT would make any muscle car-loving American proud.

UK buyers wanting a Bronco can purchase one through Sutton. The company will handle everything. From Autocar:

The company handles all import logistics, costs, and checks to bring the model over to the UK. The model starts from $29,995 (£23,700) in the US. When imported to the UK, prices for imported desirable models are driven up due to import duty, shipping and additional VAT costs. List prices can rise by as much as 30% because of these additional costs.

Since the vehicle isn’t being sold through Ford, a factory warranty doesn’t apply to it. So, Sutton is offering a two-year/30,000-mile warranty. It’s slightly worse than Ford’s three-year/36,000 mile basic and five-year/60,000-mile powertrain coverage.

Ford unveils yet another limited edition Bronco for off-road fans

Americans, have you already got an order in for a Bronco? Well, Ford is now offering you the chance to switch your spec to this new Everglades special edition.

Essentially it adds a few more off-roady options including a factory-installed snorkel, a front-mounted winch and the Bronco’s chunky-tyred Sasquatch Package. It’s only available as a four-door, and there’s also squared-off arches, Urban Green accents throughout the interior and some neat graphics behind the front wheels.

Ford reckons the A-pillar-mounted snorkel raises the Bronco’s wading depth to 925mm (for reference, the standard Land Rover Defender manages 900mm), whilst the winch is rated for over 4.5 tonnes.

The Everglades gets a ‘protective safari bar’, plus the steel underbody protection that comes on the Badlands Bronco. The front and rear axles, the transfer box and the gearbox all get raised vents to help with that additional wading depth, too.

Undelivered Ford Broncos Thaw in Giant Lot Today, Chip Shortage Blamed - Car & Driver​

The stockpile of undelivered units of the ultra-popular Ford Bronco is growing in the Detroit area. Our photographer snapped these photos on Monday, February 21.

A massive number of Ford Broncos have been spotted parked up outside of Ford’s Michigan Assembly Plant.

The build-up of SUVs is directly tied to the global semiconductor shortage, Automotive News is reporting this week.

Bronco fanatics may actually recall this parking lot, as it gained a bit of notoriety during last year’s hardtop-related delays.

Back then it garnered the nickname Dirt Mountain, though Michigan’s winter weather has made it harder to see the large earth pile for which the lot is named. As such, some members of the various Bronco forums have begun referring to the area as Ice Mountain.

Regardless of what you call it, recent videos uploaded to the Bronco6G forum confirm that Ford has once again packed the lot full of completed trucks.

Thankfully for the frustrated Bronco fans out there, one dealership owner was more willing to speak on the matter.

According to Ford dealer council chairman Tim Hovik, who owns San Tan Ford in Gilbert, Arizona, the production issues are related to ongoing chip shortages.

Ford Bronco vs Land Rover Defender: US and UK 4x4s face-off

Ford has claimed the GOAT acronym for the new Bronco, but in terms of reborn 4x4 icons, is it really?

Browsing the new Bronco section of Ford’s US website is a remarkably diverting way to spend time.

Ford’s reborn all-American off-roader comes in the kind of specification that made it famous in the 1960s and 1970s: with two doors, a removable hard roof and a chunky appearance that rather suits balloon tyres and bold colours. It’s a range tinged with nostalgia and even some humour: there’s a paint called Area 51.

However, unlike the original Ford Bronco, the new model is also offered in different styles – ones that give it the kind of practicality that it lacked in the 1990s and ultimately cost it its place in Ford’s model line-up at the time.

So here’s one with four doors. It has a soft top that can be half or fully removed, but a removable hard top is offered too. The doors also come off and it is a genuinely rugged 4x4, with a chassis beneath derived from the Ford Ranger pickup truck. This variant is a mid-spec Outer Banks 4dr. I’m not sure it totally nails the perfect Bronco aesthetic, but a few aftermarket additions would sort that.
