Foreign students drop plans to study at UCT

Tell me why a 90 odd foreign students' desire to study in SA supersedes the fight for free education for the African child. Which is more pertinent in your mind?
Free tertiary education is not affordable, as been said this year.

Actually the best things in life are free. You were duped by the neo liberals into believing that you have to pay for some thing in order to be good. German has one of the best higher free education.

It is not free, where do you think the government gets it's money? From tax payers. At least witha loan you pay five years and then it is over but higher taxes you pay forever.

The fact that foreign students don't want to study here is merely the result. The issue is that they perceive SA to be a hellhole.

Here's one:

You're not hedging anything with such a tiny amount of foreign students.

Okay, have to agree there.

Just look at the first page lamenting the loss of 90 foreign students that would have been at UCT for a single semester nogal. You'd swear it is some kind of disaster.

Not an outright disaster, but more a risk, they stand to lose a prospective income. An income which is allocated to budgeting. A budget which may contribute to ‘Free’ higher education. It is not productive by alienating the UCape Town program, ongoing disturbances at the universities may alienate the other Semester Study Abroad programs. Miami pulling out may snowball… which may result in other support withdrawing.

Or maybe that's what you think is their perception of SA, what if maybe they understand our students' fight for free education but since this is not their fight to fight they feel that it's better to leave SA alone to solve it's problems and continue with their studies somewhere else....

you missed this bit:
They include 10 University of Miami students, who pulled out due to fear of classes being delayed next year due to violent protests.

I think you lot are getting the wrong end of the stick AGAIN. Either that or you guys have serious comprehension issues. No one said that there is no positive outcome from the students coming here. Merely that you are exaggerating the effects of 90 foreigners choosing not to attend at UCT. The university is not going to fold. It is not going to fill for financial rescue. Certainly not over this non issue. Perhaps over other things.

Lastly, for your friends that do not think much of SA, I also don't think much of USA. So bloody what at the end of the day?

You should say that in a Mugabe or Zuma voice, because nothing says so bloody what better than these tinpot African leaders sucking the life out of their countries.

Our lot are useless though and couldn't manage their way out of a paper bag. Just go look at the stats about our free schools before mouthing off.

Actually, making education free is not that good. There will be no motivation to study and actually complete a qualification if eduction is free.

Let's be very honest now, what is the actual reason for this Fees must fall protests (don't say it's a campaign, it is way past that. Burning down buildings and intimidating students who want to study isn't a campaign, or even protests)? It is probably the get the exams delayed till there is no exams left to write. And yes, I have a very personal issue with these fees must fall campaigns. I'm not going to go into the detail, but let's just say it has negative side effects as well, which I witnessed first hand, and couldn't do anything about.

Even though Germany has a Free education system, you have to look at the fundamental differences between Germany and South Africa. Germany can afford it. They don't have to repair over a billion Rand' worth of damage to repair now.

Our schoools have always been a mess to start with. It is NOT because they offer free education.

It is a disaster. Less hot drunk foreign girls tottering around Observatory.

matrics that attend quintile 5 schools (almost all of which charge fees) are four times as likely to access university than those from the poorest 60% of schools (quintiles 1-3), all of which are no-fee schools

...fact that unequal access to university is rooted in a highly unequal schooling system where access to high-quality schooling largely depends on a family’s ability to pay school fees
