Cape Town - South African media reported on Saturday that two foreign television crews were robbed in Cape Town on Friday ahead of the draw for the 2010 Soccer World Cup.

The Argus newspaper said that a BBC crew filming on one of the scenic routes in the city had expensive camera equipment stolen by a group of robbers who smashed the windows of the camera crews' car.

BBC producer Andrew Bell said that they had reported the incident to the police.

"We weren't that far away, but they were so quick - in and out like a flash," he said.

Meanwhile two German journalists, who were walking to their car in the centre of town, were accosted by a group of men armed with knives and told to hand over their valuables.

They gave them their wallets, cellphones and air tickets.

Broad daylight, middle of town - not a good start.

It's all very well to shut down the air space and send all our forces to protect the vip's but this obviously leaves rich opportunities for our local wealth redistribution system.

What price for second hand camera equipment and air tickets ...

Pathetic, but not surprising and "we told you so" only antagonises the blind optimists.

At least it wasn't anything which can't be replaced.

So out of all the foreign media and not what only they got robbed?

Wow well that is pretty good in my opinion. Looks good for a low crime world cup hopefully.

Well Air Tickets nowadays are just printouts of flight bookings. There are no more old-style air tickets.

Now, if you loose them, your just re-print them.

So either the reporter is not aware of this and again it's bad info, or the robbers got a worthless piece of paper.

Or the 'journalist' is trying to make the story sound worse than it is. Because, as predicted, no major incidents were reported.

Yeah, don't know about the blind optimists , but some of the blind cynics sound disapointed no one was murdered. You got to wonder what's wrong with yourself when you're starting to think like this.

Some people will never be happy and will want the WC to fail no matter what.

It is a strange way of thinking, but I will be here, literally, when they are all proved wrong next year :)

Yup. You sometimes just got to shake your head in pity. Shame , what little self defeated whingers.

I abolsutely love all the hyperbole about what a "war zone" and "dump" South Africa is that is spread by the cynics. Imagine what the foriegn media is expecting after reading this and then experiences how mellow and wonderful South Africa really is. Imagine what a pleasant surprise is in for the world.

They're (the moaners) going to have egg all over their face and seem like a bunch of mello dramatic racist drama queens. Which of course is what they are.

It's their fault, they were probably racists or something. Or it must be apartheid's fault.

The Minister of Police already said they are ready for the world cup, so the racist white media must have made up these incidents.

Good to see you are also looking forward to the WC

Oh yeah , mugging only happens in South Africa. :erm:

Get out some more my son. All of my DIRECT family have been mugged before, all while on holiday out of the country.

So they left the valuables it plain sight? They should do a better job at warning people at the airports, a little knowledge and common sense goes a long way.

Exactly.

In the majority of big cities throughout the world, the same thing would have happened. You have to question the common sense of these people.

Maybe the Cape Town fanboyz can tell us where the 'state-of-the-art' CCTV system was when this happened??

I see the preperations are going well ahead. Some dress rehearsals have already occured. Kudos to the successful participants, so far. :) !!!

My father left a wallet with US $5000 at the Singaporean Bus terminal in Queen Street - late at night. It was a stupid thing to do, we were tired, we got on the bus - suddenly just after the bus started the bus stops - a ticket seller - old Chinese guy - runs in and hands us the wallet. We didn't even have to check but everything was there when we did afterwards. Sure it's anecdotal but it was very late, and we did not have good view of any of the guys - there was no way we'd have been able to recognise them anyway afterwards. BTW mostly poor people take busses from Queen Street to Johor Bahru - we were the only westerners there.

You've never had someone bring your wallet back to you ? Smal example. I used to work as a surf life saver when very young and you'd be amazed what valuables people would return that they found on the beach.

Ps : I've stayed in singapore and all over Asia. Returning a wallet is a very 50/50 thing there just like anywhere.
