Nice anecdote. The same thing also happens in this country, ya know ;)
 
All some of us want is less spin and less BS.

Day 1.

The Argus newspaper said that a BBC crew filming on one of the scenic routes in the city had expensive camera equipment stolen by a group of robbers who smashed the windows of the camera crews' car.

Meanwhile two German journalists, who were walking to their car in the centre of town, were accosted by a group of men armed with knives and told to hand over their valuables.

Earlier on Friday, journalists had to abandon the Cape Town International Convention Centre after a hoax bomb scare.
A journalist was arrested after claiming he had an explosive device in his bag, which he dropped and then tried to run away.

Also on Friday, a South African was arrested over two hoax calls outlining a threat to Cape Town international airport. The man was tracked down "within minutes" via the cellphone he used to make the calls to a Cape Town suburb.

I know a guy last week forgot his passport in a taxi. He never got it again. The number was there. It was just his passport and some stuff with his details.

Speak to the local people here - I mean the poor people on the ground, not bull$hitters who are out of touch with reality like therooster and other apologetics and they'll tell you that people don't care about each other in SA. They'll kill you for a cell phone or less.

I know because I worked for a number of years with these people and I treated hordes of them on Friday and Saturday nights.
 
I have had my wallet returned by a black guy peter so i am not sure what your point is.

People blow crime out of proportion in this country and act like if you step outside your house you will be mugged murdered and raped which is far from the case. Crime is bad but not as bad as some fear mongers make it out to be. Personally i cruise around all day without any fear unlike some of the people who seem to never leave home because the criminals are waiting outside their gate :D.

Muggings happen all over the world and are not limited to SA. People carrying on about we told you so, see how bad the crime is because one story of a robbery breaks. I mean honestly the way some people talk is just crazy BS.

BS, our criminals dont use knives, we aren't weaklings, we'll klap them if we see a knife ;)

the guy who called in the bomb scare was german aswell, was he not?

smashed the windows? for what reason would they make a big noise with all the security?? the hanger treatment would easily open a door

What a silly comment. Peter, South Africa like anywhere has some bad people but most are wonderfully friendly and kind and not in the slightest bit interested in killing anyone for a cell phone. I'm not an apologist I'm just not a doomsdayer neurotic who uses cronic hyperbole like you either.

Ps : I was robbed in South Korea , Thailand , The phillipines (at gun point) , The UK , France etc and I would never dare tell anyone that any of those are "bad" places.

Except South Korea. South Korea sucks.

It wouldn't happen here. And it's not me who says so, it's locals. People who live in Khayalistsha, Langa, Gugs, Ema, Mannenberg and many other places.

You're very out of touch with reality.

I can't say how often it happens in Singapore and Malaysia but I only had one such accident and my family stayed there for almost 3 years. However, we did not have issues with safety anywhere. SA is the only county where I feel unsafe.

The Germans can't even say it was just a joke because they don't have a sense of humour.

You don't know me. You're younger than me, and you've lived and interacted with fewer South Africans then I have most probably because you spent a lot of your time in SK, Asia and other places. Your opinion is very bad and quite an insult to the people who are robbed, mugged and killed on a daily basis in SA - most of whom are non-white btw. Maybe you should move out of your coccoon and see how life is for real for most urban South Africans?

Of course I've never (Thank God) been robbed directly in SA - I also don't tell people we're a crime hellhole for that reason. I speak from seeing crime victims - 20-30,000 so far personally and everyone I speak to - mostly black and some colored folks, lament the crime problem in their society; and I can see the consequences thereof. Of course I also have family, friends and professional colleagues in Singapore, Malaysia, France, USA, Australia, Japan, Germany, Taiwan, Poland, Czech Republic, the UK, and several other places and their crime concerns are vastly different to the ones I hear from residents of Khayalitsha Site C or Joe Slovo in Langa or Bonteheuwel.

And yes there are hellholes out there. Rio is one such a crime hellhole. Will they clean it up in time for the Games and WC? Another nasty place is Mexico, especially closer to the US border. Other nasty places are Nigeria although I have a friend there working contract basis who isn't afraid to drive around alone. I also have friends who've worked in Afghanistan. Those are also bad places - as is Pakistan - some expats get behaded there.

SA does not have the monopoly on criminal and health care hellholes but we're certainly doing our best to maintain our spot. :)

Hangers stopped working in the last war dude. Where u been? They want to smash, grab and run, not hang around trying to unhook door latches!

Just about all burglars captured in our neighborhood had knives as well as screwdrivers.

You seem to be quite a magnet for muggings and robberies. You've even added 'etc' to your list of victim experiences. To be honest, I have friends, family and colleagues in the countries I mentioned and none of them have been robbed personally - that I know of. They've told me a few stories from of friends of friends or from the media but unlike you - none of them have had such terrible luck and none of the stories involved violent crime - more like a car was stolen (alarm system bypassed). Reminds me of Borat asking the Jeep Dealer for to have a P-ssy Magnet installed in his Hummer. Maybe you should drop that crimimal magnet.
