Forget voice, it’s all about data

Thanks to drop in interconnection Vodacom also pays less interconnection fees.

Sigh.

Data is part of the story - not the whole story. At least in the short term. People have been calling the demise of the mobile voice market for 10 years or more!

Costs: Voice margins must be doing well because the costs of a voice call (per minute) to Vodacom are constantly reducing due to lower costs of their infrastructure. Call costs to other networks have come down due to lower interconnect. Increasing subscribers mean increasing on-net calls, which cost Vodacom far less.

Potential growth: Voice calls are elastic in certain customer segments, so that if retail call costs came down (as they did in India), more calls and longer calls are made and overall profits should increase. When mobile calls become only slightly more expensive than fixed calls, more people opt for the convenience of mobile calls.

I can clearly see that this was not written by a MyBB reporter! We have all known for some time that VC & MTN are not playing for the customer(at all), but couldn't back up the hunch with fact... now it's clear... facts are facts... I wonder how VC's MyBB reps are going to try confuse these facts?? I wonder if 10c/mb is really unsustainable??

The group delivered on an ambitious cost-efficiency (read: cost cutting) programme – which saw expenses trimmed by R500m across the board. No more Vodacom Stormers, Vodacom Cheetahs, Vodacom Park. Marketing was the obvious manifestation of the cuts, but Vodacom also trimmed its cost of sales in the channel and reduced group headcount.

Because they spent R500m on red paint.

I wonder how much of that R6bn was collected at R2/mb.

I happened to be in a VC store this afternoon and the guy in the queue in front of me (about 50 years old) was looking to buy a data modem. He had a quick look at the price sheet and picked a MyGig 3 package at R520. I pointed out to him he could get 2GB for R150, or even 2*2GB for R300 he said that it was too confusing and stuck to the MyGig 3 package. I bit my tongue and let it be. I wonder how much VC makes out of such "technologically uneducated" moms & pops in a year.

This is EXACTLY why the fat cats are fat! People don't know that they are getting prison f****ed by Vodascum and EmptyN. Hope the CPA makes this go away...or at least a little better....

As Is aid before, Vodacom care less about voice and more about data and that's why the network is so screwed in terms of voice. But in true SA spirit we will continue to be rammed up our rear ends and smile.

Sounds more like people are screwing themselves over.

May I ask what you base that on? Or is it only speculation and/or personal opinion?

Vodacom has admitted that there are significant issues on their voice network, what more proof do you need?
