Analyst firm Forrester has encouraged businesses to recruit software developers who take part in open source projects, as it shows they are keeping their skills current.

“When looking at your talent, ask software developers if they work with open source. Even if it is outside their work, they’re probably keeping their skills set up,” said Kyle McNabb, VP and practice leader of application development and delivery at Forrester, at a recent Forrester event.

His advice was part of an overall call to businesses in all industries to make software development a core competency of the business, rather than just a commodity or a support function.

This is aimed more at those "developers" that only know how to do 1 thing and how to support that thing, usually working as a "team" to complete 1 project.

This is South Africa, here our developers actually like what they're doing enough to keep on learning and try new things/develop their own **** on their own time to hone their skills and doesn't rely on the workplace to challenge them.

Developers (the good ones anyway) work long hours already. When I get home at 19:00 or whatever writing code is the last thing on my mind.

So true but most developers minds will still churn at problems even if away from said problem. I dunno how many times I've woken up with a solution or gotten out of the bath with one in my head.

Forester need to think before they blurt stupid statements. What they say sounds good, but it makes no sense.

I guess they have never actually read a fairly standard developer employment contract. Most include a nice little section that basically says anything you build while employed by us is ours, not yours to give away. Legally I cannot contribute to open source unless I get permission from my employer.

If we ignore this for a moment the next thing you need to ask is would a company want you to continue work on open source once you get employed? Most hate the idea. They want billable stuff, the more of it the better. Additionally they are usually super paranoid that intellectual property will end up being used in your open source project.

If Forrester think its reasonable to demand I spend big chunk of my personal time ( if you only putting in an hour or two a week you will get nowhere ) working on charity before I am employable then it would be reasonable for me to expect the same from every other profession.

I work on projects like MetroTwit Show in my spare time. Its not Open Source. Does that mean that someone shouldn't hire me?
Tisk. From my perspective, someone working on a product that they need to sell means that they are forced to make it as good as possible.
