Forum Pay It Forward Idea

Ok no problemo, we can always evolve it as time progresses, I tend to agree with venterap - I would go as far as saying that we should have a "Disclaimer" forum announcement at the category level, which encompasses all of the rules we as a community wish to stipulate, comments...?

problem is, as soon as you post disclaimers, you are in effect formalising the thing and then, the disclaimer needs to be explicit, implicit and absolutely bullet proof.
i thinkits obvious that this is a skills exchange and a matching service run by the people for the people...anyone who thinks otherwise is just chancing their arm if a complaint arises.

Think things through!

I *dont* like the locked thread concept. Firstly, it forces people to network in private - which defeats the object, if they want to then they can.

As an example - I too might be looking for someone to make me business cards. Peapod has already asked, how do i know who offers it? I must make a new thread? Ball ache!

Can the implementation be thought through a bit differently so that "networking" is infact possible, and not just private messaging.

see your point and did think about this..problem is, that the threads will descend into long discussions where the orignal post is lost in the fray.
What we could do is ask the original poster to list the individuals and or companies that contacted them in their thread. It's not really private messaging but more like a bulletin board concept.

Leave the (c) your family off there and I'll agree with that.
Otherwise, you wouldn't have "Matthew & Sons" or "The Barnaby Brothers" - families often make the best business partners, because they already know each others weak points !

Another idea which I would like to suggest, and which is somewhat related to Peapod's "Pay It Forward" idea but is nevertheless different from it (and for a different purpose), is a database or list to which forumites could contribute stating their skills/knowledge (etc) which they are prepared to allow others to make use of free of charge (or at a greatly-reduced rate) for MyADSL purposes.

For instance, I am a lawyer (SA advocate + New-York attorney) and have made quite a number of postings dealing with law-related issues arising on the forum. But I am also happy to do law-related stuff more generally (and without charge) for MyADSL/Hellkom/Antitrust-etc purposes. I am also a composer -- so if MyADSL needs any music composed in the future (e.g. for anti-Telscum protest events which require music) then I can probably provide some!

I think that we need to be able to know how may lawyers, accountants, graphic designers, IT specialists, financial advisers, PR/advertising people, composers, butchers, bakers, candlestick makers etc we have (amongst our membership) whose skills are available to be drawn upon in service of our collective goals.

Cele, I'm afraid that I almost certainly can't, because MVA is quite a specialised area of law involving knowledge of medical evidence. The lawyers who practise it all have connections with doctors and surgeons whom they collaborate with in obtaining, preparing and assessing the relevant medical material.

But I can certainly ask around and try to help your son in law to find a competent and honest lawyer who can help him. I'll make some enquiries tomorrow, and send you a PM.

In fact, my ex-wife was in a car accident some years ago and used a particular MVA lawyer (whom I would not recommend -- so I won't even mention his name here), and I will ask her about this as well. If nothing else, she has learned some of the pitfalls which you can fall into in MVA matters if you don't have a lawyer whom you really like and trust.

I know that many MVA lawyers work on the basis that you don't have to pay them anything until the whole case is finished -- and then you can pay out of whatever money you have won. That is necessary, because very often the injured person doesn't have much money to begin with. Part of the problem, though, is that some of these lawyers take advantage of the injured person's lack of money in order to get him or her to agree to rather unfair or unethical provisions in the lawyer-client contract -- so you have to be careful who you choose.

Look at (c) in a different light: not as partners, but as clients, i.e do not sell them anything, or buy anything from them.
