FPB earmarks R8m to censor online

It's dreadful watching this. I made my whole office sign yesterday and was close to make this a staff KPA :whistle:

Isn't it scary, how few people actually know about it:

^^^ Even if only 10% of those users are active, the petition should have well over 10K. Now is MyBB just a news-channel without an opinion about the FPB's proposed censorship? One thing I noticed is that pretty much all local online sites (htxt, MyBB, Memeburn) report on the news but never get their audience to engage in shifting the landscape. Surely sometimes one can see things being inherently wrong and then utilise the user-base to attempt change (although it is much,much safer to be neutral as to not upset advertisers). (Waiting for ban-hammer to fly in on this one)

The problem is I think people are scared something will happen to them and or their site/company's image if they speak out. I am utterly amazed hardly any news sites are speaking about this. They don't even know about it I think. I mean this is one of the more serious things news wise and it's extremely important.

Also +1 to you for getting your office to sign! Only thing I can think of doing is to continue trying to get media to cover this and keep spreading the word to as many people as possible.

I cannot just sit and do nothing and let this happen to our country. Also what really gets to me is that some people I tell get all upset about it, but just don't do anything and go "I can't do anything to stop it. Guess I'll just have to live with it"

If the world behaved like that and people never stood up for themselves, the world would be a very very different place. Just because there may be fewer in number against or even aware of oppression, doesn't mean that something cannot be done to stop it. A minority can make a big difference if you use what you have.

Plenty people have brains in this country. And the government sure as hell have nothing against that. We outnumber them greatly. Many of their supporters are uneducated or at the very least, have a poor education. While people who have had an education tend to be against what the government and people in power do here. We have the brains. It is a big advantage.

Apathy. People get involved when they get inconvenienced and then it is usually to late. Once your internet traffic flows through some fat government proxy server and you are prevented from visiting "harmful/inappropriate" web-sites (a decision conveniently made for you by a government employee), that's when people will realise that they should have done something. I don't get it why filling in a few fields and whacking a submit button is so much work. The general public wastes more time stalking people on Facebook.

Indeed. It really doesn't take long at all. But they'll go ahead and do everything else that takes way longer >.>
 
Thing is that our government pushes something through and it only gets a chance to be challenged afterwards. There is never such a thing as too late. We have an impressive constitution and legal system if it's used correctly. Something like this can never fly if it will have the impact people claim it will have.

The secrecy bill is a good case in point. Zuma had a lot of advisors telling him that there would be a huge backlash towards the anc if he signed it. It's no mystery why he didn't.

That worked great with E-Tolls now didn't it.. The majority of the country doesn't even know about this nonsense trying to be passed. It's been kept hush hush.

Yup. It went from the user pays principle to those who want to pay pays. :) Don't forget that e-tolls haven't passed the constitutional check yet.
