Free ADSL local bandwidth trial continues

Yay!!! 80 Gigs last month... on track for over 100 this month! Only problem is I am running out of stuff to download :(
 
now, this is interesting, is this going to apply for all SAIX based accounts???

So what are the ramifications of MWeb decides to carry on with the free local forever? Do we head back to Nov '05? :D
 
yes which MWEB's DSL accounts does the uncapped pertain to?

I wasn't even aware that MWEB were doing this. news to me. If the uncapped local is an option with them, I am signing up right now.

unfortunately it only applies to existing accounts... not new subscriptions...

Good news for all MWEB ADSL customers. As of 1 February 2008, MWEB is launching a trial program offering local-only bandwidth to customers who reach their data cap limit - which means you can enjoy continued access to Internet services hosted in South Africa after you use up your monthly data.*

For the duration of the trial, you will be able to access local websites, services and content free of charge whenever you exceed your cap . Local-only bandwidth refers to websites and Internet services hosted in South Africa, i.e. data is transferred from South African-based sources.

This means that if you reach your ADSL cap, you will still be able to:

* send and receive your MWEB e-mail as usual
* surf any website hosted in South Africa
* Continue to access your local Internet banking

... all at no additional cost to you!

Should you want to access to international websites, services and content (i.e. international bandwidth) after you have reached your cap, you have two options to choose from.

ADSL customers can choose between two Booster options once their data cap has run out.

1. Pay Per MB. Pay only 20c for each MB you use. New ADSL users are automatically set to use this option.
2. 1 Gig Boosters. Buy in bulk, R99 per 1 Gig or R250 per 3 Gigs. Unused Boosters are carried over to the next month (the carry over is only valid for one month).

You can change your Booster option each month by going to My ADSL.

* This is to conform with recent regulations issued by ICASA regarding the provisioning of ADSL services.

Where does it say that?

From the information on their site it looks like it is available to all customers - both new and upgraded.

actually I don't know where it says that... there was just one guy in the previous thread who mentioned that he had called them and they told him that over the phone...

There is no official end date for the current trial, and MWEB indicated that it will run until they have enough information to build a commercial service.

WTF! They already have a commercial service..... There can be no reason to cap or bill extra for local bandwidth.

So for R149 I can get 1GB international and infinite local and cancel at the end of the month??
 
Aah well, I can see their stats already: 1TB+ downloads from the newsserver/P2P and a few gigs (maybe) browsed by the other 90% of customers after their cap.

Seeing as they still have to pay for this bandwidth wholesale I doubt they will make the uncapped local offer official without adding some cost or limitation.

DblD, I think the fact that they have to pay for local bandwidth is a reason to charge extra for it?

I checked and you need to give them 1 months notice, pretty standard I guess. So like the other guys have said, give it a spin. what you got to lose.

Also with all the attention this is getting, it won't be long till MWEB changes their minds with all the usage. It seems it was flying below the radar and now it's out in the open.
 
i digress, R130 for openweb 30 gig local only, and 120 GIGS int downloads :) gotta love openweb.
 
Free local bandwidth???

I'm shocked.

Fujitsu-ICL, as Eject (http://www.eject.co.za) have for ages been selling their ADSL bandwidth with a local content as well.

I.e. the 1Gig package (R89) includes 9 gigs local bandwidth after the 1gig international cap is reached, the 2gig gives you 2+28, then there's 3+27 and 5+25.

But Telkom wants to charge you R25 a gig after the cap and 'free' bandwidth is exceeded.

I'm obviously missing something here.... :confused:
