Free ADSL upload bandwidth

practical uses for this account?... since cctv streams might be marked as "heavy"

they need to be upfront with what they consider acceptable usage

makes me think of my sig.... it's free, but no [-]proper usage[/-] heavy weights please :D

Online backups? I could easily see someone backing up their data to a "$5/month unlimited storage" service such as BackBlaze (no affiliation, just remember them from the "homebrew NAS").

Being able to upload large amounts without hammering your cap would make something like this feasible.

I could see folks having one of these just for backups, and another account for their general use, and then just klapping the remaining GB at the end of each month using torrents or something.

That sort of usage pattern would probably kill the offering, though.

and if the backups is 1gig+ a day ?

Why is this uncapped, as it is open for abuse. They should rather give a 250G upload cap from the start. This is nothing more than a publicity stunt. They have no intension of keeping this in the end. Mweb did the same with their uncapped local trail. They will complain this service is being abused by high usage as an escape goat. This is to ensure they can take it away totally instead of reducing it. They know what their network can handle.
Other than this being a possible temporary thing, I do think it is a great product.
Who agrees with me?

iirc, caps offshore exclude your uploads in any event.

but clearly there are people out there who need to upload. therefore for them it is a great product.

I would imagine they would be able to see what the upload traffic is, ie torrents. I think common sense would prevail here.

what do openweb consider fair usage?

3 gigs? 5 gigs? 10 gigs?

the way bandwidth is in this country, i bet one will get an email warning when he hits around 10 gigs uploaded. i woukd'nt be surprized if its any less.

Watch myBB guys, you will see plenty saying they been shaped on upload very early..lol

Hmmm. My IP Camera at home uploads about 70MB an hour. That would break the 1GB upload mark very quickly.

Yup I could run through 60 to 90 Gigs upload a month easily, and that is not for torrents or any form of P2P. No point in buying a service if you don't know whether you can use it or not. That "we will be the judge of you" attitude does not really work for me. If they can't tell you what is deemed to be acceptable before you buy it, then it's pointless.

+1

I can think of quite a few good uses for an account like this, but then the AUP must be clear on what is NOT acceptable.

my point exactly.

Take 5 users. each have to just backup their pst, mine is around 500 meg already (after i reduced it from 1.4 gig). that is 5 * 5 = 1500 meg that leaves out all their other documents and so on...

...we want to give the public a service, but please don't use it for what it's for

I love the acceptable usage stuff nowadays. Everybody puts it in their offers now so if this go wrong they can clamped down.

P.S. Anyone know if the upload speed is limited at all?

This is an awesome product! I'm going to get me one.

The way I look at it, is that it has the potential to be an awesome package, but if acceptable usage for the upload is 5 or 10 gig, then for me it's no good.
