Free anti-virus programs: are they worth it?

MSE cannot update through a proxy. That's probably the causing the update issue at your work. As for your house - it should work if your PC is just connected to your router and your not using any kind of proxy server.
 
tried mostly all these free antivirus programs and mostly all crap, nod keeps on crashing leaving you with no protection,PC Cillin is useless didn't detect anthing, bitdefender slowed down the pc so badly it had to be reloaded, kaspersky same PCC the only thing that actually worked without problems is MSE

i guess have some protection is better than nothing.....

It's specifically useful for suspicious files or files you downloaded from an untrustworthy source. Install the uploader, right click the file and send to virus total. It scans with 40+ engines and produces results in an instance. You will be amazed at how many files Nod32 doesn't detect!
 
AVG and add on's

Using the latest free AVG offering, supplement it with malwarebytes anti malware, a squared free, and remove it pro. All free and seem to keep pc running beautifully.

I use ThreatFire to compliment my NOD32.

You can download the 2010 version and use your 2009 license key's thats what I am running. Kaspersky Anti-virus 2009 gave me this option just before I loaded Windows 7.
 
I have used Avira for ±8 years together with the Comodo internet security which has its ouwn secondary AV (both are the free versions) - no hassles yet (touch lots of wood).
 
If Symantec wants to compete with other products they need to ship a CPU upgrade in the box :p
Seriously though, AVG does it for me. Safe computing can gaurd you against 80% of viruses, the AV solution will cover the rest.

Doesn't the rootkit still have to be run with administrative privileges though regardless of the OS?

Genuine question here I am not a security expert or anything.

I'm pretty sure that you will be able to do it. I had 2006 & 2007 keys for PC Cillen and Bitdefender and I used them this way.
 
When it comes to free, I prefer Avast. For paid, I like the total solution from Kaspersky Internet Security 2010.
 
While there are some good free AVs, they're not nearly as good as some of the products from Eset (for example). Your data is valuable - why compromise it for the sake of saving a few bucks per year in choosing AVG over NOD32?
