Free File Uploading Site - PlatinumUpload.com

Hi All,

Just thought I'd post this here; a friend and I started a file uploading/storage site www.platinumupload.com and the site is 100% free (we're mainly carrying the costs ourselves, with some outside help)! Our long term goal is to expand the service with a number of chargeable value added offerings (larger file uploads, etc) but PlatinumUpload, as the infrastructure currently stands, will always be free.

The site is really more about short-term storage (for sending your friends/colleagues/etc. large files) than pure data archiving, but we're definitely open to special requests (lifting the 100MB file size limit, etc.)

Anyway, give it a try and let us know what you think!

What's the point?

Well...to provide a reliable file hosting service - firstly because we needed one (where we'd be able to send around direct download links for the actual files without any ads or download wait-delays) and secondly because some people we knew required a system like this (for the transferring of work-related files and such).

Just give it a try!

Well...you can look at this comparison http://www.cloudwards.net/comparison/ and clearly see that this isn't a one or two solution market; if you want desktop integration, then Dropbox or Google Drive is a very good choice - we wanted something more like rapidshare.com or mediafire.com without the ads/sign-up costs or download wait-delays. Just a site where your files are encrypted and where you can access and share them directly. All the others are good, but this is just how we envisioned file storage and sharing and seeing as the server infrastructure's now available, well...it's free, so perhaps someone else will like how we do things.

Hi Keeper,

Really just the encryption (and seeing as the encrypted files are propagated across our network...thus creating a more "redundant" temporary backup solution). Also, the file-size limit is really not "hard-fixed", we just wanted to start off with something that won't cause everything to fall over. Our current (which could be wrong) reasoning is that you'd rarely want to send across larger files (unless you're "dealing" in movies and such, and that's not really what we're about).

Registering also wasn't originally a requirement...but we added a small "file manager" so had to link that in there and the "account system" makes it possible...

Hmmm...I won't venture that far; we do use 256-bit AES but it's not on the client-side (only once the file is uploaded, is it encrypted and then synced with all other servers in the network...in the name of redundancy and such) but iCloud uses 128-bit AES - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4865 - for photos (which isn't a weakness, it's just that AES is a 128-bit cipher that works on 128-bit data blocks and to get it to 256-bit, you're just increasing the key-length...but therein lies the weakness as well). So in short, your selfies "should" be secure...
