So basically Im working on some Dataflow diagrams for work. Obviously I need to use free software. I've been using paint which is fine, only problem I have run into is that the images span large surface areas/resolutions. I want to be able to select and drag certain parts together, but the parts span wider than my screen resolution. Paint has an option of zooming in, but not zooming out. I want to zoom out and edit the image that way..

Any suggestions? Don't need anything fancy, just this functionality really.

Thanks

can you not perhaps increase the resolution of your monitor?

The image attributes in pixels is 3000 x 3000. judging by processes I have investigated so far, it will definitely get even bigger in both height and width. Its a very complex diagram =(

Screencard only allows 1024x768 max =P

Vector drawing

I don't know how your current work looks, but for editing diagrams, raster images are quite a bit of work.

You should rather look at something that does vector images.

I grew up using things like Corel Draw, but there's also opensource or free alternatives, like InkScape. Vector graphics also scale much better for when you want to print it. More software here

You might also look for something thats dedicated to diagram drawing. I know we had some app that we had to use for UML in varsity that was also open-source.

Dia is a diagram creation tool that supports UML modeling. It is a very nifty little tool.

If you insist on using a drawing tool, have a look at Gimp. it can do almost everything Photoshop can.

Do yourself a favor and also look at the vector programs, it's not purpose built like DIA, but it is mighty useful for the cases where you want te edit line-style drawings for various purposes. I still find it much easier to use than your normal paint-style programs.
