Free Internet Access through WiFi Network

It is actually free. I've managed to connect to one of the towers in Centurion. Got a IP and tried to browse. This took me to there web page and I logged in with a account I created earlier. After that I got an AVG update and browsed the web a bit. Only problem is I tried it a few days later and was unable to get a IP address. It looks like there DHCP server was down or something. Does anybody know anything about that ?

Sorry m8 no idea..... How was the speeds? if you could give us an indication pls?

Now you are cooking with Gas.
And then Iburst teams up with Neotel, and IVY can keep LLU

Exactly! If they could it would be great. But i think in terms of wireless, neotel will look at wimax. Its stations give a radius of up to 70 km i hear with quite decent speeds.
i will be really pissed off if they cant find a way to provide "last mile" access by bypassing telkom. They already have the fibre cabling underground they bought from transnet... So if they could use wimax, or atleast partner with iburst for now, it will be great.

I know these mesh networks are a little out there, but if the people that set up these community networks can buy bandwidth from neotel and act as a kind of isp, then y not?

I heard a comment on cdma, I dont think neotel is going that route, i may be wrong.

Dunno where you been reading...

WiMAX, an IEEE 802.16 specification, is a last-mile technology that uses the 700-MHz to 66-GHz frequency to deliver transmission speeds from 2M to 6M bit/sec to each site within a 2-mile cell radius. If there is line of sight between the tower and customer location speeds can exceed 6M bit/sec. It is considered an alternative technology to landline services.

A further benefit of the WiMAX standard is that it relies mainly on 2 to 11 GHz bands, as opposed to the overcrowded 2.4 GHz band used by WiFi. The specifications of WiMAX avoided many of the mistakes that went into the WiFi standard, allowing longer reach, no reliance on line of sight (referred to as Non Line Of Sight, or NLOS), greater bandwith, and better encryption. The 50 km radius should be taken with a grain of salt, it would most probably only apply to a true line of sight point to point connection under ideal atmospheric circumstances.

WiMax is not a silver bullet...

It will atleast give a radius of 20-30km.....Richard, i dont know if youve read up, but korea have already SUCCESFULLY deployed a wimax network (although they call it Wibro, its a very similar standard)... so has malawi, believe it or not. As far as wireless last mile access is concerned, its the best standard we have, esp when compared to iburst's standard, wifi and 3g... there shouldnt be any argument about that...

See, want, must have ........

Mmmm........ OK ! I want in, always always a sucker for a new bleeding edge service offering.

RoDent - I'm in a warehouse in Simarlo / Hennopspark next to Old Jhb Road, do you recon I'll be able to pick up signal ?

I have a 802.11g router from Miro, dont know the model.

Free D-link ADSL modem to the person that can help me get hooked up.

The speed wasn't great ... around 2-3KB a second ... but for FREE it isn't too bad. Might be nice to trickle some torrents on it :D

You should be able to see the water towers from your roof (Look in the direction of Makro). All you'll need is 'n IP65 enclosure outside with something like a 12Dbi Yagi antenna with a LMR400 cable and connectors. A lightning arrestor is also suggested. Also get one of those TV antenna tripod jobbies you'll mount a alo pole to for the Yagi. Easy !

But first, maybe we should check if you've got signal. I've got a notebook with a portable Yagi antenna. PM me and let's see if we can arrange something.

I think the water tower will be vissible from the roof, but there are some big ass pine trees in line with the water tower. Sentech tower is 50-60m away from me.

How much will all the kit cost ?

The roof is pretty high, there should be line of sight.

I understood most of what you said, but what is an IP65 enclosure ?

Do I need another wireless router, mine does not seem capable of handling an external antena, or is this a matter of some soldering and boer maak 'n plan ?

Unfortunately your router will not work. You need a access point that’s capable of going into client mode. This can be connected to your router on the WAN side and give everybody connected to your router access to the line .... make since ?

Ba hum bug ! We will have to wait and see if Chris Cringle has something in the bag for me.

And THAT is the reason why only select protocols are functional on the free service ;) Sheesh. Give people a finger...

Im connected to metrofi

does anyone know if its possible access shares from other pc's connected to the network ?

Hi Hooloovoo, are you still getting an IP address via DHCP ... Myne's been failing all the time now ?
